Tesla says that its numbers would do a better job to “conserve energy and address climate change.” While that may be true, it’s pretty apparent the company is using this medium to hurt its competitors where it matters most: their wallets.
The Alliance for Automotive Innovation (a group that consists of automakers and automotive parts companies) estimates the industry will be facing more than $14 billion in fines if only the NHTSA’s proposed increases go through. We’re talking $6.5 billion in fines for GM, $3.1 billion for Stellantis, and $1 billion for Ford alone.
On the opposite end, the NHTSA says these rules will help to save Americans money at the pump, with $18 billion being saved on all fronts by 2032. If Tesla gets its way, those savings could be even higher.
