Summary
Bond 26 is still in early stages of development, as indicated by producer Barbara Broccoli’s comments. Production has not yet started on the film.
The gap between the release of No Time To Die and Bond 26 could break a franchise record, with audiences potentially having to wait until 2026 or 2027 for the next Bond movie.
Bond movies typically take three to four years of full attention to develop, emphasizing the time and effort put into creating each installment of the iconic franchise.
Bond 26 producer reveals a new update on the timeline development for the upcoming installment. The latest entry in the 007 universe was 2021’s No Time To Die, which saw the end of Daniel Craig’s James Bond era. Now, the franchise is searching for the next James Bond as development continues for the 26th James Bond movie.
Bond 26 producer Barbara Broccoli speaks on the development of the franchise’s next installment. As Broccoli tells The Guardian, a Bond movie “takes [their] full attention for three or four years.” While Broccoli said that “making the feature films” was the studio’s “focus,” the producer indicated that production had not yet started on Bond 26. Check out the full quote from Broccoli below:
“Our focus is making the feature films. When we get going on a Bond movie it takes our full attention for three or four years so that’s our focus.”
The Gap Between No Time To Die & Bond 26 Could Break A Previous Franchise Record
Broccoli’s statement comes after another comment about Bond 26 wherein she said that the Bond production still has a “big road ahead reinventing it.” In both quotes, Broccoli implies that Bond 26 is still in fairly early stages of development. It seems that Bond 26 has not even gotten to the point of “get[ting] going on a Bond movie,” meaning the three to four-year development clock has not yet begun.
James Bond movies are a long-standing Hollywood tradition, beginning in 1962 with the Sean Connery-lead Dr. No. Over 61 years, there have been 25 James Bond entries, making the average gap between films less than three years. Previously, the longest 007 hiatuses have been between License to Kill (released in 1989) and GoldenEye (1995) and between the most recent two Bond films, Spectre (2015) and No Time To Die (2021). The gap between Craig’s final movies is attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic delaying No Time to Die for another year.
Bond 26 could break a franchise record if Broccoli’s timeline proves accurate. In particular, No Time to Die is already two years in the past. Even if the development of Bond 26 started before the end of the year, Broccoli’s three to four-year range would indicate that audiences would not see a Bond film until at least 2026 or 2027. By virtue of Bond 26 still being pre-development, that release date could soon be pushed out even longer.
