Apple will reportedly rectify the issue in a subsequent software update, due before year-end. But this won’t happen anytime soon, it seems. Per the report, iOS 17.1 was just released, so frustrated BMW owners may have to wait for the next update for a solution. Apple has said affected customers should stop using the wireless charging system in the meantime.
The NFC chip is a vital part of a modern iPhone, allowing the owner to make contactless payments. For BMW owners, the Apple smartphone can also be used as a digital car key (other marques also offer this feature). While inconvenient, some owners rely on their digital key, especially when carrying the physical key is impractical or poses a security threat.
If the chip is damaged at the wrong time, it could inconvenience a driver or put them in a less-than-ideal situation.
