The Nottingham Panthers have set up a fundraiser for the family of Adam Johnson – their player who was killed in a freak accident this weekend.

Johnson, 29, died after his throat was slashed in an accident in an ice hockey match against the Sheffield Steelers.

His mother and team confirmed news of her son’s death on social media, touching off a wave of tributes across ice hockey.

His fiancee paid a heartbreaking tribute to him today too.

Earlier today ‘vile’ social media trolls targeted a Black ice hockey player who accidentally killed Johnson.

Matt Petgrave, from Toronto, Canada, crashed into one of Johnson’s teammates during the Saturday match, footage showed.

The club released a statement on Twitter

The collision appeared to throw him off balance and cause him to raise his leg into the air towards the Minnesota native.

There has been no suggestion Petgrave did anything wrong, with police stressing that an investigation into Johnson’s death is ‘normal procedure’.

Yet in ‘sickening’ posts on X, formerly known as Twitter, users accused Petgrave of being a ‘murderer’ before declaring ‘White lives matter’ or ‘Keep hockey white’.

Susan ‘Kari’ Johnson, who had for years shared footage of her ‘boy’ in the rink on Facebook, posted: ‘I lost half of my heart today. Love you always, Munch.’

The Nottingham Panthers, a British professional ice hockey club and member of the Elite Ice Hockey League, said that the team was ‘truly devastated’ after Adam died.

Tonight the club took to X and posted to say that it would be raising funds for his family.

A spokesperson said: ‘We are aware that an existing fundraising page has been shared widely. However, the owner of that page is not known to or affiliated with the club.

‘We ask that any fans who wish to donate to Adam’s family exercise caution and await the publication of the official GoFundMe page.’
