New images from Monarch: Legacy of Monsters reveal closer looks at some of the show’s mightiest titans. The upcoming Apple TV+ television show will mark the first foray into live-action TV for the Monsterverse after the animated show Skull Island premiered on Netflix in June 2023. The show will retrace the origins of the secret organization known as Monarch and will alternate between multiple time periods in the wake of Godzilla’s attack on San Francisco in Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla movie, which started the Monsterverse.
Via Entertainment Weekly, new images of some of the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters‘ Titans have been revealed. The first, Mother Longlegs, will be introduced to audiences in the pilot episode via a flashback scene with John Goodman’s Bill Randa, reprising his role from Kong: Skull Island. In that same sequence, Mantleclaw is revealed, with Godzilla and Endoswarmer also expected to appear in the television show. Check out a look at the monsters via a gallery of photos below:
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Will Not Only Be About Godzilla
While Godzilla has been heavily promoted in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters‘ trailers and posters, emphasizing his presence in the series, the show will likely not be centered solely on him. The show will not only expand the Monsterverse beyond the presence of Godzilla but further develop what it briefly introduced in films like Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. In those movies, the two titans are but the tip of the iceberg of the many that live among humans, which Monarch has known for many years.
It’s likely said company history that explains why the show will go back and forth to the past and present and see different actors play the same character through different iterations. Goodman has already been confirmed to reprise his role as Randa, while Anders Holm will be playing a younger version of the character. But the show will seemingly focus on the decades-long journey by Lee Shaw, portrayed by Kurt Russell in the present and his real-life son, Wyatt Russell, in the past.
While it is still unclear what overarching narrative Monarch: Legacy of Monsters wants to tell by jumping through different eras in the Monsterverse timeline, it’s clear that the origins of Godzilla and the Titans go way beyond the apparition of Kong in Kong: Skull Island. Just like the Toho Godzilla movies saw the emergence of multiple creatures that threatened human existence, the upcoming series aims to expand what audiences previously knew about the Titans while watching the movies.
The first two episodes of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will premiere on Apple TV+ on November 17.
