Honda has confirmed the Prelude coupe unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show this year will go into production. That’s the good news. The bad news is that it won’t be the sports car everyone was hoping for. Speaking with CarsGuide, Honda Large Project Chief Engineer, Tomoyuki Yamagami, explained the intention isn’t for it to be an outright sports car akin to the GR86 or Miata.

“This isn’t going to be the sportiest, zippiest car that’s going to be tossed into the circuits, so that’s one thing,” said Yamagami. He goes on to say, “The other one is, this is going to be the ‘prelude’ for all of the electric vehicles that Honda is going to be launching. So that is why, because it’s going to be one of the first such models, we thought the name Prelude just best fits this model.”
