While Zach LaVine remains well liked in the locker room personally, there have been growing questions by teammates and the coaching staff about his accountability going back to last season. There are games in which he was pouty after a win, and then losses in which teammates didn’t understand where he was directing the blame publicly, said a source.

Zach LaVine dodges trade talk, admits to being frustrated by the Bulls current situation: “It’s an upsetting thing when we’ve been trying to do the right thing for the last three or four years. It seems like we’re in the same place”

Zach LaVine doesn’t deny that he and the Bulls could be headed for a breakup, and also that his feelings won’t bleed into the locker room. Too late, as the Bulls are officially a broken team.

Zach LaVine refused to answer today whether he wants to remain on the Bulls:
“If we need to talk about that at a time, you know, right now isn’t really the time to talk about that. … If something comes out obviously later on, that’ll be the time I talk about it.” pic.twitter.com/V0oSYOxaOc1:16 PM

Zach LaVine had multiple opportunities to deny being open to a possible change of scenery
And while he said he remains focused on winning and feels supported by Chicago, he didn’t take any of those opportunities

As far as LaVine remaining committed/professional: “I don’t take anything for granted. My time here has been nothing but wonderful. I’ve grown up here. I’ve raised a family here. Had some great memories. Hopefully, people understand that, how much I care about Chicago.” – 12:45 PM
KC Johnson @KCJHoop
LaVine, on why he’s not taking his usual path on rumor: “That’s why I have representatives like Rich Paul. If he speaks on my behalf, that’s my agent. That’s who I obviously have my camp with. They talk to Arturas and them. My job is to go out here and play. Simple as that.” – 12:38 PM

Normally, Zach LaVine says he’s frustrated Bulls aren’t winning. Usually, he responds to rumors by saying “if it didn’t come my mouth . . .” He didn’t do that today. Said “it’s a business.” Said Rich Paul and AK have good relationship. – 12:26 PM

Toronto is my Zach LaVine stealth team.
Yes we’re doing this again. Of course we’re doing this again. We’ll do this for every offense-first star guard until Toronto finally acknowledges that you actually have to put the ball IN the hoop to win basketball games. – 3:06 PM
Kyle Neubeck @KyleNeubeck
As it pertains to the Sixers, they’ll do due diligence on LaVine, but I don’t suspect he aligns with their overarching plan.
Which is to say:
—too much long term money
—doesn’t play defense
—likely to wait until closer to deadline for any big trade – 2:44 PM

Zach LaVine all-time ranks among Bulls:

2nd in points per game
2nd in threes
3rd in 30-point games
2nd in 40-point games
2nd in 50-point games (tied)

I think it’s kind of telling that more fanbases are excitedly tweeting about getting Alex Caruso than Zach LaVine right now.
LaVine is obviously the better player, but it shows just how much contract and versatility matter on a playoff stage. Caruso fits basically anywhere. – 2:32 PM
KC Johnson @KCJHoop
Regarding LaVine, reported over offseason that Bulls held exploratory talks on him. Their asking price has been high. The unanswerable question for now is: Does that price drop in light of Bulls’ struggles? But players are very aware change could be afoot if matters don’t improve – 2:25 PM
Derek Bodner @DerekBodnerNBA
I was lukewarm on LaVine — the player, the contract, and even the cost to acquire him — before Tyrese Maxey made this early season leap. At this point, I’d give Maxey the next few months until the deadline to see if this superstar level play is legit, then go from there. – 2:23 PM
Anthony Puccio @APOOCH
Zach LaVine is owed $178 million through 2026-27. That’s a whole lot of money for someone averaging 22 on 17 shots per game. – 2:23 PM

More on this storyline

Daniel Greenberg: According to @KCJHoop on @mullyhaugh , Chicago Bulls guard Zach LaVine has “never, never gotten over” head coach Billy Donovan benching him late in the loss against the Orlando Magic on November 18, 2022. This was a game where Zach had 4 points on 1-14 shooting. -via Twitter / November 15, 2023
Asked directly if he wants to be elsewhere, LaVine didn’t opt for yes or no. “If we need to talk about that at a time, you know … right now is not that time to really talk about that. Play the Orlando Magic (Wednesday), try and get a win,” he said. “If something comes obviously out later on that will be the time I talk about it. “I mean, I think it’s a combination of things where if you’re in a losing situation or a place you’re not winning games, people are frustrated. From players to the front office, the coaches … we’re not happy because we’re not winning. It’s not a bad thing, but it’s just the nature of the business. More things come up when you’re not in a winning environment.” -via NBC Sports Chicago / November 15, 2023
The Bulls held exploratory trade talks centered on LaVine during the offseason, but those didn’t gain traction, sources said at the time. NBC Sports Chicago reported then that some members of the organization have wavered in their belief as LaVine as a lead option on a championship-contending team. Asked if he feels supported by the organization, LaVine said yes. -via NBC Sports Chicago / November 15, 2023
