The Final Audi TT Has Left The Building

We’ve known for some time that the TT was on its way out, but it doesn’t make this moment any less sad. The word ‘iconic’ gets thrown around a lot, but the TT was truly an icon, especially in the design world. When it arrived in 1998, the sports coupe blew the world away with its elegant, minimalist styling, so clearly inspired by the Bauhaus movement.

Even as Audi’s design language evolved, the little two-seater retained its famous profile and details. Over the years, it evolved into the third-generation Type FV/8S we know today, a delightful sports car that, in TT RS guise, can even terrify some supercars from a dig.

This writer treasures the memory of a spirited drive around a mountain pass in a Kyalami Green TT RS. The sheer tenacity with which the RS gripped the tarmac is still mesmerizing, and so is the howl of the 2.5-liter five-cylinder reverberating off the rock face.
