The Volkswagen Group will be handing off the development of the upcoming electric Scout SUVs to Magna Steyr, the makers of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

In a report by the Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung via Automotive News, the German company will use the Austrian firm’s engineering chop to develop new models for Scout, an independent subsidiary under the VW Group.

VW reportedly paid Magna Steyr an order worth 450 million euros (about $493 million) to develop electric pickups and SUVs. The order is the company’s biggest development contract to date, effectively overturning VW’s previous decision to keep the Scout brand purely American.

Scout is looking to launch two new models by the end of 2026 – both expected to be underpinned by the Group’s new Scalable Systems Platform (SSP).
