Summary

Power Rangers has had several characters who died in battle or sacrificed themselves, although many were later resurrected.
Pink Ranger Kendrix was the first Power Ranger to die in battle, sacrificing herself to prevent the evil Psycho Pink Ranger from wielding a powerful weapon.
Red Ranger Zayto from Power Rangers Dino Fury died twice, first as the Dino Fury Red Ranger and later as the Cosmic Fury Zenith Ranger, ultimately becoming one of the Morphin Masters.

For a show that would never use the words “kill” or “death,” there are surprisingly quite a few Power Rangers who died in battle or sacrificed themselves in Power Rangers’ TV canon. Power Rangers has always been very careful with killing characters on screen or depicting any level of violence, as the show is primarily aimed at children. That said, throughout Power Rangers’ chronology, multiple Rangers died on screen, although many of them would be brought back.

While most of the Power Rangers who died were eventually resurrected, some important characters were never brought back. Some Power Rangers deaths had to do with real-life events and characters having to be written out of the show, while others were designed to be part of the story. Additionally, some Ranger deaths happened simply to match storylines and scenes from the Super Sentai shows.

10 Best Power Rangers Of All Time, Ranked

From Mighty Morphin legends like Tommy and Jason to new names, it can be difficult to pick the best Power Rangers among so many great characters.

12 Pink Ranger Kendrix

Power Rangers Lost Galaxy

The first Power Ranger to die in battle, Pink Ranger Kendrix, was the focus of one of Power Rangers’ most serious episodes. Actress Valerie Vernon, who played Kendrix in Lost Galaxy, had to the series after being diagnosed with leukemia. Vernon would continue to be credited in the show, but Kendrix was written out of the story. To prevent the evil Psycho Pink Ranger from wielding the Savage Sword, one of the most powerful weapons in the Power Rangers universe, the Pink Ranger grabbed the sword herself. However, the sword had so much energy, that Kendrix’s body was destroyed.

Fortunately, the Rangers would resurrect Kendrix using the Quasar Sabers at the end of Power Rangers Lost Galaxy. In the meantime, Karone, former Astronema from Power Rangers in Space, replaced Kendrix as the Lost Galaxy Pink Ranger. Valerie Vernon returned to play Kendrix again in Lost Galaxy’s final episode, as well as in Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue’s “Trakina’s Revenge” crossover.

11 The Original Magna Defender

Power Rangers Lost Galaxy

The Magna Defender is quite different from other sixth or extra Rangers, but he can be considered a Power Ranger regardless. Lost Galaxy played with the mystery of the Magna Defender’s true identity until it was revealed that the spirit of the original Magna Defender took over the body of Mike, Leo’s brother. The Magna Defender was more of an anti-hero than a hero, but he eventually proved his value by stopping the destruction of Terra Venture that he almost caused. The Magna Defender sacrificed himself to save the Power Rangers and everyone in Terra Venture, passing his powers to Mike definitively and dying as a result.

10 Red Ranger Alex

Power Rangers Time Force

Power Rangers Time Force has one of the most impactful first episodes in all of Power Rangers, if not the most. The series begins with Red Ranger Alex, who had just proposed to Pink Ranger Jen, dying in battle. The Time Force Red Ranger was killed by Ransik, who would be the main villain for the rest of the show. Opening a new Power Rangers season with the death of the Red Ranger was a bold decision and set the tone for how great Time Force was going to be. Time Force was all about time travel, though, and Alex was eventually “resurrected” due to changes in the timeline.

9 Red Ranger Officer Tate

Power Rangers S.P.D.

While not much is known about Power Rangers S.P.D.’s Officer Tate, it is well established that Sky Tate’s father, who was once a Red Ranger, died in the line of duty. Curiously, while Officer Tate was part of S.P.D. and technically an S.P.D. Red Ranger, his uniform was that of a Time Force Red Ranger. The reason is simply because the show reused costumes and props from the previous season, Time Force. A popular theory suggests the proto-S.P.D. technology served as an inspiration for the Time Force Rangers in the future. Regardless, Sky would honor his father years later by becoming an S.P.D. Red Ranger.

8 Solaris Knight

Power Rangers Mystic Force

Daggeron, one of Power Rangers Mystic Force’s Ancient Mystics, was originally not referred to as a Power Ranger. However, in his Solaris Knight form, Daggeron was very much the sixth Ranger of the Mystic Force team. At the end of Mystic Force, the Solaris Knight is killed in battle by Octomus the Master. Daggeron would soon join the list of dead Power Rangers who were resurrected, though. Necrolai brought the Solaris Knight back to life, and Daggeron even got a rematch against Octomus the Master.

7 Red Ranger Mack

Power Rangers Operation Overdrive

Although Mack is an android rather than a human, the Power Rangers Operation Overdrive Red Ranger experiences death and resurrection throughout the show. After a journey of self-discovery, Red Ranger Mack was ready to sacrifice himself to defeat Flurious – and he did. Mack used all his power to destroy Flurious, dying in the process. As an android, Mack could be rebuilt, but, as discussed in the Ship of Theseus, the result would not be the same person the Rangers once knew. Fortunately, with the help of Sentinel Knight, Mack’s soul was brought back. In addition, Mack was turned into a real human.

6 Red Ranger Mr. Shiba

Power Rangers Samurai

Similarly to S.P.D.’s Officer Tate, Power Rangers Samurai also had a Red Ranger who died before the events of the show and whose children would carry on his legacy. Mr. Shiba, father of Jayden and Lauren Shiba, was one of the many members of the Clan Shiba who became a Samurai Ranger. Mr. Shiba died while performing a sealing ritual that would buy Earth a few years in the battle against Xandred. Interestingly, both Jayden and Lauren Shiba would become Samurai Red Rangers, just like their father.

5 Robo Knight

Power Rangers Megaforce

The first of Power Rangers Megaforce’s extra Rangers, Robo Knight died by transferring all the power he had left to the core Rangers. While Robo Knight’s body was not destroyed, it was not easy to bring him back. In fact, Robo Knight was resurrected by the bad guys and returned as Dark Robo Knight, now serving Vrak. Fortunately, after a battle against Red Ranger Troy, Robo Knight broke free of Vrak’s influence and continued to help the Power Rangers.

4 Silver Ranger Steel

Power Rangers: Beast Morphers

Power Rangers has seen quite a few robots who became Rangers. This includes Power Rangers: Beast Morphers’ Steel Silva, a robot originally assembled to become a vessel for one of the season’s villains. Ironically, the Beast Morphers Silver Ranger would sacrifice himself to stop the monster who tried to use his body as a vessel, Evox. Impressed by what the robot had done, Power Rangers’ Morphin Masters intervened. Not only did they bring Silver back to life, but they also made him human.

3 Yellow Ranger Trini

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always

Almost 30 years after Trini’s last appearance in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Power Rangers: Once & Always brought closure to the character. Thuy Trang, who played Trini Kwan in Power Rangers, tragically passed away on September 3, 2001. Power Rangers had never addressed what happened to Trini in-universe until Once & Always. The Power Rangers reunion opens with the Yellow Ranger, always with her helmet on, sacrificing herself to save Blue Ranger Billy from Rita Repulsa’s attack. Trini’s death sets the events of Once & Always in motion, with her daughter, Minh, eventually becoming the third Mighty Morphin Yellow Ranger.

2 The Original Rafkon Rangers

Power Rangers Dino Fury

65 million years before the events of Power Rangers Dino Fury, a group of Knights of Rafkon followed the Sporix monsters to Earth. Alone on a distant planet trying to save the universe from monsters they had helped create, these six Knights of Rafkon were assisted by the Morphin Masters and became the first Dino Fury Power Rangers team. However, four died in their first battle as Power Rangers – the Dino Fury Green, Black, Blue, and Pink Rangers. Red Ranger Zayto and Gold Ranger Aiyon were the only ones who survived, and they would be part of a new Dino Fury team after waking up from their sleep.

1 Red Ranger/Zenith Ranger Zayto

Power Rangers Dino Fury/Power Rangers Cosmic Fury

Zayto, who was both the Dino Fury Red and the Cosmic Fury Zenith Rangers, died twice in Power Rangers. At the end of Power Rangers Dino Fury, the Red Ranger used the forbidden Dino Master Saber to destroy the Nemesis Beast, dying from the effort. Zayto would be brought back by the Morphin Masters as the Zenith Ranger, but his time in the world of the living was not long. Every time Zayto used his magic in Cosmic Fury, he would become closer to returning to the Morphin Grid. Power Rangers Cosmic Fury’s ending sees Zayto dying again, this time definitively. That said, Zayto did become one of Power Rangers’ Morphin Masters.
