One British seaside town has been named the UK’s worst in a new report, despite visitors praising its beautiful views.

Morecambe, in Lancashire, was named the 5th worst coastal town in the UK, with a Telegraph report saying it could be “so much more than it is”.

The report saw the Telegraph rank a number of towns across the UK out of 100, based on factors including housing, high streets, renovation, conservation and cultural clout.

Morecambe scored just 24 out of 100 despite its stunning coastline.

Only Blackpool, Weston-Super-Mare, South Shields and Rhyl, which was named the country’s worst seaside town, ranked lower.

Topping the Telegraph’s list was St Ives, which the newspaper gave 98 out of 100.

Through the years, Morecambe has seen a number of failures in its bid to attract more tourists to the town.

During the 1990s, the town’s council struck a deal to host Blobby Land, a theme park in honour of the much-loved pink alien Mr Blobby, but it was destined to fail.

When it opened in 1994, it saw thousands flock through its doors, but the theme park’s popularity quickly waned and it was closed after just 13 weeks in business costing the taxpayer £2.6million.

Prior to the 1960s, the town was one of the most popular among northern tourists from, but as soon as air travel became more accessible, travellers headed to foreign destinations where sun could be guaranteed.

Despite the Telegraph’s low ranking, visitors have praised the town for its “delightful” atmosphere.

The town scores four stars out of five on TripAdvisor, with reviewers saying it offers something for all the family.

One reviewer, Andrew E said: “Delightful place to appeal to all ages.

“Such a lovely promenade – a fantastic effort made with interesting public art, interpretation, sculpture, play spaces and more.

“Fantastic views across the bay, spotlessly clean and litter free and a nice selection of ice cream parlours, cafes and pubs along the route.”

The Eden Project North planned for Morecambe Bay could help the town get back to its past glory having recently been awarded £50m of government funding.
