A Volkswagen car has ploughed into the front of a shop on a retail park in Liverpool. Crowds of onlookers have gathered at the entrance of Boots in Edge Lane after the incident which happened around 2.30pm today.

Security workers have been seen manning the shop’s mangled entrance, the Liverpool Echo has reported. A metal bollard has also been bent out of shape, they said.

One eyewitness described the scene as “bedlam”, as Merseyside Police scramble to the scene. A huge emergency response has since been scaled up, with a cordon erected.

Videos from the scene show a smaller cordon put up outside the store’s entrance, just footsteps from where the abandoned Tiguan SUV remains – with all its doors wide open. Shards of glass remain scattered all over the floor.

Merseyside Police have since confirmed an investigation is commencing and that officers are looking to establish how the incident unfolded.

Another silver car parked outside the store has a noticeable dent in the drivers’ side door – with police now confirming the vehicle smashed into three others before ploughing into Boots.

No injuries have been reported. Cordons remain in place in Montrose Way. The Boots store sits next to an M&S Foodhall and a H&M fashion retailer. It’s not yet known if either of these stores suffered damage as a result.

Witness and CCTV enquiries are being carried out in the area, Merseyside Police have said. If you have any information on this incident, please contact @MerPolCC online using log 465 of Thursday 7 December.
