Summary
Horror crossovers can be wild and entertaining, even if they receive bad reviews and box office numbers.
Some horror crossovers prioritize fun over scares, resulting in enjoyable B-movie messes.
From monsters battling each other to comedic meetups, there are various styles of horror crossovers to choose from.
The horror genre has seen various crossovers, and while some were completely wild, they are worth checking out. Crossovers have happened in various genres for decades, but those in the horror genre are especially interesting. The world of horror is home to a variety of monsters, creatures, murderers, and more, and even though some share a couple of similarities, it would be uncommon to find them in the same universe. However, some filmmakers saw the chance of bringing together one or more horror villains in crossover movies, though not all of them were a success with critics and viewers.
Many horror crossovers brought together characters with similar powers, backstories, or modus operandi, giving some cohesion to their story together, but many others went on a wilder route. Some horror crossovers chose fun over scares, and even though that led to bad reviews and terrible box office numbers, they are entertaining enough to be worth the time. From popular slasher killers to mutants and ghosts that either joined forces or battled each other, there’s a variety of styles to choose from with these wild horror movie crossovers.
10 Lake Placid vs Anaconda
When two monstrous creatures cross paths to cause chaos
In 2015, the stars of two different monster horror film series were brought together to terrorize anyone who had the bad luck of being in their territory. Lake Placid vs Anaconda starred the giant female crocodile from the Lake Placid film series and the Anaconda from the film series of the same name, who cross paths when the crocodile escapes and frees the anacondas, who some scientists tried to crossbreed with the crocodile. The rest of Lake Placid vs Anaconda is as chaotic as the premise implies, but it’s also enjoyable in all its B-movie (or C-movie, as some critics labeled it) mess, and it even has Robert Englund as a mercenary.
9 Gingerdead Man vs Evil Bong
The unlikely meeting between a gingerbread man & a bong
Charles Band’s 2013 horror comedy Gingerdead Man vs Evil Bong brought together the main characters of his two other film series: the Gingerdead Man from the film series of the same name, and the Evil Bong from the eponymous series. The former is an evil gingerbread man made of gingerbread spice mix combined with the ashes of a deceased serial killer, who then terrorizes a small-town bakery. Eebee the Evil Bong is exactly what its name says: a sentient, malevolent bong that traps the smoker in a surreal realm with killer strippers and other creatures.
Gingerdead Man vs Evil Bong is as wild and bizarre as it sounds and that’s where its strange charm lies, as it brings together horror and comedy in ways that other horror comedies don’t date to do, and the visual effects are actually quite impressive.
8 Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys
There’s a difference between the puppets & the toys
Two different types of killing toys came together in 2004’s horror comedy Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys, directed by Ted Nicolaou. Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys follows the great-grandnephew of the creator of the evil puppets who brings them back to life on Christmas Eve, and his success is noticed by the manufacturer of the demonic toys, who wants to steal the puppets. In an unexpected turn of events, the puppets take a heroic role in this wild story with not only evil puppets and toys but also demons. Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys has been labeled as “so bad it’s good”, and thanks to its setting, it counts as a Christmas movie.
7 Godzilla vs Kong
Two classic monsters in an epic battle
Godzilla and King Kong have met a couple of times, but one of their most successful battles happened in 2021’s Godzilla vs Kong, directed by Adam Wingard. The conflict between these two massive creatures begins when King Kong is moved from Skull Island to Hollow Earth to retrieve a power source for a secret weapon that will stop Godzilla’s attack. Godzilla vs Kong was a critical and commercial hit, in big part thanks to how it gave each monster the space and importance they deserve as massive creatures, and how they end up actually teaming up for a moment against another threat.
6 Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein
A crossover with various classic horror monsters
In 1948, the comedy duo of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello came across some of the classic horror monsters in Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein. In it, Count Dracula (Bela Lugosi) partners up with Dr. Sandra Mornay (Lenore Aubert) as he requires a “simple, pliable” brain to reactivate Frankenstein’s monster (Glenn Strange). Dracula finds an ideal brain in Wilbur Grey (Costello), who is tricked by Mornay despite the warnings of none other than the Wolf Man himself (Lon Chaney Jr.) – and the Invisible Man (voiced by Vincent Price) also makes an “appearance”.
Thanks to its perfect balance of comedy and horror (which got lost in the sequels), as well as bringing together almost all the classic monsters, Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein is now a horror classic and a must-watch for those who are into the classic monsters.
5 Alien vs Predator
Being trapped between two alien races is a real nightmare
In 2004, two of the most famous aliens in sci-fi history were brought together in a movie that, though not well-received by critics, was a hit with the audience: Alien vs Predator. The Xenomorph and the Predator’s first meeting was possible when a group of researchers discovered a pyramid buried under an island in the Antarctic. Alien vs Predator lacks in terms of story and makes way for inconsistencies in the timelines of the aliens, but the action and the simple fact that these two aliens shared the screen gave it enough points to make it worth the time.
4 House of Dracula
Dracula met other classic monsters
Before Dracula met other classic monsters in Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, he met some of them in Erle C. Kenton’s 1945 movie House of Dracula. In it, Dracula (John Carradine) and Lawrence Talbot/Wolf Man (Lon Chaney Jr) arrive at the castle of Dr. Franz Edelmann as they are looking for a cure to their vampirism and lycanthropy, and they later come across the body of Frankenstein’s monster (Glenn Strange). Although House of Dracula relies too much on coincidences, has few horror elements aside from the nature of its main characters, and the plot is quite absurd, it’s entertaining and fans of Dracula and the Wolf Man will have a good time watching these two in the same castle, even if their stories make little sense.
3 Sadako vs Kayako
Two Japanese nightmares in one movie
What’s the solution to getting rid of two of the scariest supernatural presences in Japanese horror? Pitting them against each other, of course. Sadako is the villain of the Ring franchise, whose spirit haunts a videotape that kills anyone who watches it after seven days. Kayako is the villain in the Ju-On/Grudge film series, and she’s the spirit of a woman who, along with her son Toshio, was murdered by her husband, so now she and her son haunt the house where they were killed.
When two students watch Sadako’s tape, they come up with a plan to enter Kayako’s house in order to pit both spirits against each other to see who will take the victim, and in the process, their curses would end. The cliffhanger ending of Sadako vs Kayako is more terrifying than their individual curses, and though the movie is a slow burn, seeing two Japanese nightmares go against each other is strangely entertaining and satisfying.
2 Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman
Another reunion of classic horror monsters
Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman is the first horror crossover and, like other examples on this list, it brought together some of the classic monsters. Released in 1943 and directed by Roy William Neill, Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman sees Larry Talbot/Wolf Man (Lon Chaney Jr.) being brought back to life. Looking for a cure for his lycanthropy, Talbot ends up using Victor Frankenstein’s old but functioning equipment and later tries to have his life sucked from his body and transferred into Frankenstein’s monster (Bela Lugosi).
The way Wolf Man and Frankenstein’s monster are brought together feels a lot more organic than other crossovers of classic monsters, and it’s so beautifully shot that it’s not surprising that it made way for other crossovers, which had a thing or two to learn from the one that started it all.
1 Freddy vs Jason
Two of the biggest slashers battled each other
In 2003, two of the most popular slashers in the horror genre faced each other in Ronny Yu’s Freddy vs Jason. When Freddy Krueger is weakened and forgotten as the citizens of Springwood are taking medication to repress dreams, he awakens Jason Voorhees to seed fear so he can grow his powers and return – but Jason isn’t as easy to control as he thought. Freddy vs Jason stayed true to each killer’s style and mythology and found an interesting way to bring them together, enough to make viewers wonder throughout the movie who would be the winner.
Freddy vs Jason almost expanded with a sequel/crossover with Evil Dead, which ended up happening in a comic book series, while Freddy vs Jason remains the highest-grossing movie in each series.
