US-spec Teslas make use of the camera-based Tesla Vision system to operate Autopilot. The large number of Teslas recalled is because Autopilot comes standard on every new model.
This follows a February bulletin (among others) in which Tesla recalled 360,000 vehicles equipped with Full Self-Driving Beta. The NHTSA claimed that the software could cause a vehicle to act “unsafe” in intersections, resulting in serious crash risks. In this case, Tesla issued an over-the-air fix to remedy the issue. And the same thing will happen with this latest Autopilot recall. The NHTSA document doesn’t go into detail but notes, “Tesla will release an over-the-air (OTA) software update, free of charge.”
This time around, drivers may be suspended from using Autosteer if they repeatedly ignore their responsibility “to demonstrate continuous and sustained driving responsibility while the feature is engaged.”
Owners will be notified of the recall via mail by February 10, 2023. The number for this recall is SB-23-00-008.
