Crowds of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside a Vancouver hotel Thursday while Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hosted a private Liberal party fundraiser inside.

The demonstrators demanded Trudeau stop providing Canadian military assistance to Israel and do more to end the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

Some protesters were covered in white sheets, flecked with red paint, as they lay on the ground outside the hotel. Others waved Palestinian flags.

“We’re lighting candles for the liberation of Palestinians,” said Tamara Herman, an organizer with Independent Jewish Voices, which advocates for “peace for all in Israel-Palestine.”

The Vancouver event took place two days after Trudeau hosted another fundraiser in Ottawa. While the focus of the event was said to be on affordability, tickets ranged from $850 for those under the age of 35, up to $1,700.

In a separate incident in Vancouver last month, Trudeau was surrounded by pro-Palestinian protesters while dining, who shouted for a ceasefire. At least two people were arrested, including one man who allegedly assaulted a police officer, while another was arrested for obstruction.

About 100 officers were called to the scene to control the crowd as hundreds of protesters gathered and Trudeau quickly exited the restaurant.

Videos shared on social media captured protesters waving Palestinian flags and repeatedly admonishing Trudeau for having “blood on your hands.”

“We want Canada to take a real position on this issue and not simply say that, you know, the Israeli occupation should be restrained,” said Charlotte Kates, an organizer with the Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network.

On Thursday evening, Trudeau posted on his X account that “It’s always good to be back in British Columbia — and to be with those who call this great place home.”
