Russell Wilson‘s rocky tenure with the Broncos may have reached its end.
On Tuesday, head coach Sean Payton made Wilson the scapegoat for the team’s lackluster recent performances, including a 26-23 loss to New England, ignoring the fact that he was just as responsible for the loss to the Patriots because of his decision to call timeouts that allowed New England to rethink its strategy on the winning field goal drive. He isn’t going to bench himself, though.
Wilson hasn’t been the problem this year, and he should get an opportunity to lead another franchise in 2024 if Denver moves on. The decision to do so, however, would have significant ramifications for the Broncos.
Here are five teams, in alphabetical order, that make the most sense to land the former Super Bowl-winning quarterback.
Atlanta Falcons
The Desmond Ridder experiment failed spectacularly, and Taylor Heinicke is no more than a stopgap option. Young offensive playmakers, including Kyle Pitts, Drake London and Bijan Robinson, are better than the weapons Wilson worked alongside in Denver. The defense under first-year coordinator Ryan Nielsen has also been one of the most improved units in the league and should continue its upward trajectory. The Falcons have enough pieces to make a playoff push in 2024. They only need a quarterback (and possibly a different head coach) to get them there.
Las Vegas Raiders
Will the Raiders tear down or build back up? The answer will determine whether Las Vegas is a suitable home for Russ to cook. With Davante Adams and Josh Jacobs on the roster, the Raiders could use 2024 to see if a veteran offensive core led by those two and Wilson is strong enough to get them back to the playoffs.
Minnesota Vikings
If Kirk Cousins leaves in free agency, Wilson would arguably be the best option to replace him and keep Minnesota in contention. Justin Jefferson is the best wide receiver in football and is due for a lucrative contract extension. The Vikings must do everything possible to make him want to stay. Ensuring the team has a veteran, proven quarterback on the roster could only help.
New England Patriots
Here are a couple of nightmare scenarios for the Patriots:
A) They maintain their current draft position at No. 4 overall and the top three quarterback prospects in the class go 1-2-3. B) They aren’t in love with the quarterback that falls to them at fourth overall.
In either case, New England might need to improve at the position elsewhere. Wilson could be the best available option, as long as he waits until after the draft to sign with a team.
Washington Commanders
The ownership group led by Josh Harris is expected to make broad changes to the organization during the offseason. While Washington is in an excellent position to draft one of the top QBs in the class, like New England, it could see its draft position drop if it unexpectedly pulls out a win (or two) during the final two weeks of the regular season. A couple down years in Denver will dampen the excitement of adding Wilson, but signing him would be better than running it back next season with 2023’s cast.
