Created by Karl Schaefer and John Hyams, Black Summer is an American drama and a spinoff of Z Nation. The first season of the series consisted of eight episodes, and it made its debut on Netflix on April 11, 2019.

In November 2019, the network renewed the show for a second season, and Netflix released the eight-episode sequel on June 17, 2021. The Asylum, the same production company behind Z Nation, produced Black Summer. John Hyams primarily wrote and directed the series. The storyline focuses on Jaime King’s character, Rose, who is separated from her daughter amidst a zombie apocalypse.

The official shooting for this spinoff started on July 23, 2018, and it took place in Calgary, Alberta, with filming locations such as Queen Elizabeth High School, Stampede Park, McMahon Stadium, and under The Calgary Tower. The production team was initially scheduled to begin shooting for the second season in 2020. However, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed their plans.

What is Black Summer about?

The first season of Black Summer featured a group of zombie apocalypse survivors. The survivors are Rose, Anna, Sun, and Julius James/Spears. The series has them struggling to stay alive during the earliest and deadliest days of the zombie apocalypse. In the series, the characters show determination to retrieve the supplies dropped by an airplane from above. As they go in different directions, they face significant challenges and fight for their lives.

Moreover, the show holds surprises for the viewers in every episode, and similarly, the second season also feels entirely unique. It has given a new perspective to the zombie-based series. Although the run and approach of the show are slow, it still feels refreshing and new to the viewers. While some viewers might find the scenes overly prolonged, the show’s creators have done their utmost to incorporate a fresh approach and address any criticism.

Black Summer Season 3 Release Date

The second season of the series came on Netflix in 2021, and there is no official information regarding its renewal. However, in April 2023, John Hyams, the co-creator of Black Summer, hinted that the show would not have a third season. He was asked the same question of whether the show would be renewed, to which he replied, “Sadly, nah.” Other than that, he also replied to a post that talked about the release of the third season in 2024.

He said, “I’ve seen the same things but know nothing about it.”

Moreover, the lead actress, Jamie King, was also excited about the third season and discussed her ideas in an interview. But it looks like she won’t be able to execute those ideas after all.

Conclusion

From the discussion above, it is evident that Black Summer will not return for a third season. The main reason for this cancelation is the lack of global viewership. However, fans can still watch the first two seasons on Netflix.
