Key Takeaways

Ford recalls more than 450,000 Ford Maverick and Bronco Sport.

Faulty body and powertrain control modules could lead to the vehicle losing drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will recalibrate the modules at no cost to the owner.

Ford has recalled 456,565 examples of the popular Bronco Sport crossover and the Maverick pickup truck owing to a potential problem that could see both vehicles shut down while driving. The Blue Oval has already issued a fix for the problem.

According to the NHTSA recall document, the problem stems from faulty body and powertrain control modules that cannot detect a low battery charge. As a result, the 450,000+ vehicles run the risk of losing drive power and the loss of electrical accessories. This is dangerous and could result in serious problems. One only needs to look at the BlueCruise-related crash that occurred earlier this year to see what could happen if a stalled car with no hazard lights is left in the roadway.

Here’s What’s Behind The Problem

The NHTSA report notes that, following an investigation, numerous Maverick and Bronco Sport owners solved the problem by replacing the 12-volt battery. This led to the discovery of the problem with the control modules. Ford says the issue can be remedied; dealers have been instructed to calibrate the body control and powertrain control module at no cost to the customer.

Just this year alone, Ford has had multiple recalls for its vehicles. 2.2 million Explorers were recalled globally in January due to A-pillar exterior pillars at risk of detaching. Just a few days before, the F-150 with the Max Trailer Package was recalled due to a rear axle bolt that may break, increasing the risk of the truck rolling away, even when the transmission is in Park. This is not a good look for the Blue Oval, which has racked up the most recalls of any manufacturer for three years in a row.
