Early Life

Hans was inclined toward music from a very young age. When he was three, he started playing piano. Zimmer told CNN Worldbeat that his dad died when he was six years old.

“That’s when I decided I was going to become really serious about music because it was my refuge. It was my way of calming the demons in me or at the same time sometimes letting them roar, letting them rip, letting the monster out and seeing that it wasn’t so scary being able to look it in the eye.”

Though he was born in Germany, Zimmer moved to England once he turned 14. He faced several hardships in school and was expelled many times for focusing on music rather than studying. After finishing school, he started his professional music career by writing jingles for advertisements and playing in rock bands.

In 1979, he started a band with Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes and named it the Buggles. Even though the group became successful, Zimmer did not want to stay limited and started to find it boring.

In the 1980s, he collaborated with Stanley Myers and worked with him on many films.

By 1987, Hans had crafted his art to compose a film score alone. He composed scores for Terminal Exposure and The Last Emperor and won the Oscar for The Last Emperor. Zimmer started to gain international fame after he composed the score for Rain Man in 1988. Some years later, Disney got to know about his works and trusted him with the score of The Lion King. It was so good that he won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and two Grammys for the same. Later in his life, he created many blockbuster films, such as Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, The Last Samurai, The Da Vinci Code, The Simpsons Movie, Angels & Demons, and Sherlock Holmes.

In the 2000s, he also composed songs for popular video games such as Call of Duty 2: Modern Warfare and Crysis. Other of his credits include the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. In the 2010s, he composed scores for Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. In 2019, he worked on Dark Phoenix, Interstellar, and Dunkirk. Controversies

In 2008, Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard’s score for The Dark Knight was disqualified by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for having credits to so many composers. Zimmer insisted that he and Howard wrote everything. “My basic argument was–composers are honest human beings. If we’re telling you that we, and we alone, wrote the score, why don’t you believe us? We were very candid. We said, ‘Why would we lie? And if you don’t believe us, go ask Christopher Nolan, the film’s director. He saw who did the work.’”

He is also accused of using ghostwriters and interns to write many of his songs. One of his statements, where he said he can’t read music, also made his achievements debatable.

Richard Friedman sued Zimmer for allegedly copying his 2004 work entitled “To Our Fallen” for the principal music of ‘12 Years a Slave.’ However, Richard dropped the lawsuit a year later and also apologized to Zimmer.
