Baldur’s Gate 3 may allow players to thoroughly explore the titular city, but one player wanted to take things a little further and show off a particularly iconic part of The Forgotten Realms. Avernus is a major part of the game’s setting as the narrative picks up shortly after the events of the Descent into Avernus adventure, but Baldur’s Gate 3 only allows players to steal a glimpse at the fiery landscape. It seems like a waste given how important it is to the narrative, so it stands to reason that some users would want to see more.
Posted to Reddit by katszenBurger, the talented modder showed off an image of their in-development custom map, created with the Baldur’s Gate 3 toolkit, based on Avernus.
The actual location looks fantastic as the river of blood and twisted mushrooms truly evokes the idea of the entrance into Hell itself. KatszenBurger notes that the idea behind the map is based on official images of Avernus, but they also took plenty of inspiration from Caelid, a scorched area that plays a major role in FromSoftware’s massive RPG Elden Ring.
What’s The Deal With Avernus?
Some BG3 Players Wanted A Grand Tour
Given that Baldur’s Gate 3 opens with the Mindflayer Nautiloid crashing out of Avernus, many Dungeons & Dragons fans believed they’d have an opportunity to wade back into Hell at some point. Unfortunately, that’s not the case but Avernus still features in the story, especially when it comes to Karlach. The Tiefling Barbarian is desperate to escape the hellscape after suffering unimaginable horrors during the Blood War; she ultimately sees the Nautiloid as her one chance to flee her captor Zariel.
Avernus is most commonly depicted as the traditional version of Hell. The largest of The Forgotten Realms’ Nine Hells, it’s a fiery wasteland filled with demons and monstrosities constantly looking to torment anyone foolish enough to enter their domain. Avernus has served as a staging ground for the aforementioned Blood War, an eons-spanning battle involving Devils and Demons constantly clashing for control.
KatszenBurger’s impressive Avernus map is just an early example of what can be achieved with the Baldur’s Gate 3 toolkit. Larian Studios’ decision to provide the community with official modding support should enable talented creators to take the game’s systems and make some genuinely impressive levels and scenarios. KatszenBurger’s fantastic vision for Avernus is just the first step in what could hopefully be an immersive new map.
