A Jet2 flight en route to the UK was forced to make an emergency landing in Cologne after a passenger tragically died mid-flight.
The incident occurred on Monday, September 16, during flight LS3214 from Burgas, Bulgaria, to Liverpool.
The flight departed Burgas at around 1 p.m. local time (12 p.m. BST) but was diverted roughly two hours into the journey after a passenger, reportedly suffering from cardiac arrest, required urgent medical attention.
Despite efforts from fellow passengers and crew members to resuscitate him, the man was pronounced dead upon landing.
Flight tracking data showed the plane’s diversion to Cologne, landing on runway 8 at 3:32 p.m. local time (2:32 p.m. BST).
Upon landing, the aircraft was met by a medical team who boarded the plane in a remote section of the runway.
After several hours on the ground, passengers were transferred to a replacement flight, which departed Cologne at 9:17 p.m. BST, eventually arriving at Liverpool John Lennon Airport at 10:27 p.m.
A Jet2 spokesman said: “We can confirm that flight LS3214 from Bourgas to Liverpool John Lennon diverted to Cologne on Monday 16th September, due to a customer requiring medical assistance.
“Regrettably, we can confirm that the customer sadly passed away.
“We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the customer’s family and friends at this very difficult time.”
No further details about the man have been released.
This is the second such tragedy involving a Jet2 flight in recent months.
In June, Rosemary Burns, the widow of Celtic football legend Tommy Burns, passed away aboard a flight from Tenerife to Glasgow.
After feeling unwell during her holiday in the Canary Islands, Mrs. Burns boarded an earlier flight home, but the plane had to make an emergency landing in Cork, where she was pronounced dead.
