Warning: contains spoilers for Uncanny X-Men #3The iconic X-Men hero Nightcrawler has been a lot of things – a pirate, a priest, a circus performer, and now – an ally to the Furry community! Kurt Wagner, the fuzzy blue mutant, reveals his affinity for Furries in Uncanny X-Men #3, after one of the young Outliers attempts to insult him by calling him a Furry, only for Nightcrawler to declare his support for the community proudly.
Nightcrawler is one of the X-Men’s most famous and beloved “visible mutants,” maintaining his status as a sex symbol for years despite his visual differences, making his support for the Furry community completely unsurprising.
Kurt is the latest Marvel hero to give his blessing to the Furry community, after Deadpool’s recent adventure as an anthropomorphized fox, which he gleefully does after the new mutant Ransom uses “Furry” in an attempt to degrade Nightcrawler, leading Kurt to admit that he has had a lot of fun at Furry parties!
Nightcrawler Has Lived His Entire Life As A Real-World Furry
Many casual fans of the X-Men assume that Kurt Wagner simply has blue skin, like his mother Mystique, when in reality Nightcrawler is covered in fine blue fur. In this way, Kurt and Hank McCoy’s Beast share a similar visual mutation as blue, fur-covered mutant heroes. Kurt has been discriminated against and hunted for his appearance since he was a child, experiencing the fear and disgust elicited by his shocking appearance when meeting someone new. Even Kitty Pryde, the beloved young X-Men hero, was initially afraid of Nightcrawler and his “demonic” mutation.
Nightcrawler tells Ransom that Furry parties, presumably at Furry conventions, are “magnificent,” revealing that not only does he support the Furry fandom, but he has actually spent time around the community. Just like Nightcrawler, the real-world Furry fandom has been maligned and mocked for years now, with many denigrating Furries without ever exploring who they truly are. Many people assume that being a Furry is exclusively a sexual activity, which is incorrect, with the reality being that the Furry community is a group of like-minded individuals who enjoy anthropomorphic animal characters. Just like Kurt Wagner, there is nothing inherently disgusting, scary, or dangerous about a Furry, and they deserve to be treated with kindness and respect.
Kurt Wagner Is For The Acceptance Of All Marginalized People
Nightcrawler will always defend those in need
While Nightcrawler wore an “image inducer” during some of his early appearances, which made others view him as a “normal” person, he quickly stopped this practice, instead leaning into his identity as a visually identifiable mutant. Kurt has always been a champion of the oppressed, acting as the moral core of the X-Men for decades, fighting for the acceptance of all marginalized communities. It is no surprise that he would push back against Ransom’s maligning of the Furry community, seeing that he himself is “furry” and recognizes the pain that Furries experience while being ridiculed by strangers.
In his blue, furry heart, Nightcrawler will always be an X-Men hero who defends those who are facing discrimination and hatred, and now the proud Furry community can count Kurt Wagner among their many iconic allies.
