A small Scottish town has been named as the most affordable place to live in the UK based on a study which analyses house prices and salaries in the area.
Cumnock, in Scotland, is a Victorian looking town in East Ayrshire and lies at the confluence of Lugar Water and Glaisnock Water.
The area has good connections to other nearby towns and is known for its industrial past.
While Cumnock is the most affordable place in Scotland, the most affordable in England, and also in second place for the whole of the UK is Shildon, County Durham.
In Cumnock, the median value of a home is £79,030 while the average income of a couple per year is £75,665. This makes the town four times more affordable than the average UK home.
In Shildon, the median value of a home is £69,650 while the average income of a couple per year is £65,438. In England, eight out of 10 of the most affordable areas are in the North East, with six in County Durham.
Shildon is a quaint town just 13 miles outside of Durham, putting it in the perfect position for city commuters who are looking to escape the hustle and bustle after work.
The study by Zoopla found that British couples can expect to pay nearly four times their combined salary to buy a home in 2023.
In the most affordable parts of the country, you’ll pay just over one year’s joint earnings to buy a local property.
For London the most affordable places are Croydon, Greenwich and Tower Hamlets. Eight out of the top 10 most affordable places to live in the UK are in Scotland which dominates the list.
In Wales, the most affordable town is Ferndale with the median value of a home at £96,960.
