In a tragic incident in Mid-Wales, the British Transport Police have confirmed that one person has died as a result of a collision between two trains. Following a low-speed crash on the line near Llanbrynmair, Powys just before 7:30pm, emergency services descended upon the scene.

The collision involved the Transport for Wales 6.31pm service from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and the 7.09pm Machynlleth to Shrewsbury train. A statement released by Network Rail and Transport for Wales announced the temporary closure of the line, stating: “Our main priority is the safety of our passengers and colleagues, and we are doing all we can to support the emergency services as they respond to the incident. We would encourage passengers to plan ahead and check journeys before travelling via National Rail Enquiries.”

The British Transport Police elaborated: “Officers were called to the line near Llanbrynmair at 7.29pm to reports of a low-speed train collision involving two trains.”

Emergency teams, including firefighters and ambulance services, attended the accident site where initially only minor injuries had been suspected.

Despite earlier reports, it was tragically revealed that the incident claimed one life, reports Wales Online.

Images from the scene reveal the extent of the devastation, with one train carriage entirely crushed due to the force of the collision, even at a low speed. Additional photos show emergency services still present several hours after the initial impact, securing the area and investigating the incident while ensuring all passengers and staff were adequately cared for.

The police have yet to release further details about the victim’s identity, but their next of kin have been notified, according to a statement.

BTP Superintendent Andrew Morgan confirmed: “We can sadly confirm a man has died following this evening’s incident. We extend our deepest sympathies to his loved ones, alongside everyone else impacted and specialist officers continue to provide support. He said the BTP are working hand in hand with emergency services and the rail industry”.

He stated that the BTP are working closely with emergency services and the rail industry “to understand the circumstances leading up to this collision”.

He added: “Residents will see an increased policing presence in the area in the coming days as a result.”
