Take care out there this morning (Picture: Alex Lentati/LNP/REX/Shutterstock)

Commuters are being warned to take care and keep an eye out for potential disruption this morning as fog blankets the UK.

Large swathes of southern and eastern areas will be seeing fog, and while there aren’t any Met Office weather warnings in place, forecasters do warn that the fog will be slow to clear as the morning goes on.

Trains in Wales are disrupted for the second day in a row due to slippery rails, causing cancellations and hour-long delays on several lines across the country.

There are some rail replacement buses in place.

Meanwhile, on the roads, there are lane closures on the A56, to repair barrier damage caused by an overturned lorry on Monday, and on the A31 for emergency resurfacing works after a spillage.

Rail replacement buses after Wales train crash

Trains are still being disrupted in Wales after two trains collided on Monday evening, killing a passenger in his 60s.

Rail services are unable to operate between Shrewsbury and Machynlleth, with the line set to remain closed until at least the end of the day on Wednesday.

Here’s the latest advice from Transport for Wales:

‘Services between Machynlleth and Pwllheli are able to run as normal. Services are also running between Machynlleth and Aberystwyth.

‘Rail replacement transport is in operation between Shrewsbury and Machynlleth / Aberystwyth.

‘The main road through Llanbrynmair (between Caersws and Machynlleth) is closed to help with the recovery of the incident. This means that buses have to take a detour, resulting in extended journey times.

‘Connecting trains to Aberystwyth / Pwllheli will wait for the buses to arrive at Machynlleth.’

Advice for driving in fog

National Highways has provided the following advice for drivers who might not be looking forward to driving in fog this morning.

Use dipped headlights, wipers and demisters. Avoid using full beam, as the fog reflects the light back, reducing visibility even further
According to the Highway Code, you should use your headlights when visibility is below 100 metres (328 feet)
Use fog lights only when visibility is seriously reduced and below 100 metres (328 feet)
Beware of other drivers not using headlights
If you really can’t see, consider stopping until it’s safe to continue

Only drive as fast as conditions allow:

Create a bigger gap between you and the vehicle in front of you
Slow down so you can stop within the distance you can see clearly
Check your mirrors before you slow down, brake slowly
