FOR MOST OF his 13 years in the NBA, Bradley Beal has had a good sense of who he is as a player. An elite shooter and scorer. A willing passer and versatile defender. The three All-Star games validated that self-concept. So too did the annual interest in him from contenders while he starred for the Washington Wizards. But this past year was a strange one for Beal. Not just because he’d finally asked for and been traded to the Phoenix Suns last August. But because he’d been asked to and tried to play an entirely different position for the Suns than what he had played for most of his career: point guard. “They were using me more as a facilitator than a scorer and honestly, that kind of f—ed with my head,” Beal told ESPN. “Literally this whole summer, I had just had a whole reflection, just like, ‘Who are you?’ “I had to have a real talk with myself, you know. I took some time to look at myself in the mirror to answer: ‘What do I need to do better? Who am I?’ And then just get back to that.”

Bradley Beal and Devin Booker can play point guard. But last season’s experiment in Phoenix proved they probably shouldn’t. “Honestly, that kind of f—ed with my head,” Beal told ESPN. Enter ⁦Tyus Jones⁩, who took a lot less for an opportunity to win. espn.com/nba/story/_/id…10:56 AM

Went live after the NBA games last night to talk about them and break down tape:
-Suns beat the Lakers. Really impressed with PHX’s defense, particularly Beal’s.
-Paolo Banchero’s best NBA game so far.
-Bucks D still bad.

Final: Suns 109, Lakers 105.
LAL drops its first game of the season. Suns fouled up 3 to send LeBron James to the FT line with 7 seconds left. He made the first one and intentionally missed 2nd but LAL didn’t grab OREB and Beal sealed the game with FTs. – 12:27 AM

Tough decision for Beal in the moment there since a swing-swing off a double at the top is the way to go but it got Booker with AD on him again. Might have been able to just drive. – 12:24 AM

Kellan Olson @KellanOlson
Stagnant nature of Beal’s health last year didn’t offer much of a glimpse at the very, very good overall basketball player he is. We’re seeing it across his first three games and I hope fans that wrote him off give him a second chance because he’s going to help a whole lot. – 10:41 PM
Gerald Bourguet @GeraldBourguet
Just like that Royce O’Neale sequence in the 3Q last game, Bradley Beal’s defensive play feels contagious. Suns get a stop, Book drills a 3 on the other end, and the Suns are back within 2 with a fully engaged crowd – 10:40 PM
Gerald Bourguet @GeraldBourguet
Superb hustle play from Bradley Beal on that fast break despite it being a 3-on-1. KD pumping the crowd up afterward – 10:39 PM

More on this storyline

Over the Suns’ final five games against the Wolves — their last regular-season game and the four-game sweep — Minnesota pressured the player bringing up the ball on a combined 157 possessions, the highest number the Suns faced over any five-game span last season. “I mean, it was just a different role, a different responsibility,” Booker told ESPN. “It was something we both weren’t accustomed to, but we were willing to learn and do it.” -via ESPN / October 31, 2024
