WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for Time Cut (2024)!Lucy finds out that she’s mistaken about the real identity of “E” in the letter that she found to Summer, leading to a major realization about her sister in Time Cut. In 2024, Time Cut’s main character Lucy explains that she feels her life has always been impacted by the death of her sister, Summer, who was tragically murdered about three years before she was even born in 2003. Since they never met, Lucy initially only knows about Summer through her parents’ memories and what’s left in her old room, which includes a mysterious letter addressed to her from “E.”

When Lucy accidentally travels back in time two days before Summer’s murder in 2003, she finally gets to learn the truth about who her sister was, which helps her to piece together who really wrote the letter. The letter simply states, “Summer. Now I’m free but you’ll never be. You’ll regret this. – E.” Originally, Lucy thought that “E,” stood for Summer’s ex-boyfriend Ethan, whom their parents believed was the Sweetly Slasher’s real identity. However, there was another important “E” in Summer’s life, whose real relationship with her was kept secret from their parents.

“E” Is Actually Emmy, Not Ethan, In Time Cut

Emmy Wrote Summer The Letter That Lucy Would Find In Her Room 21 Years Later

It turns out that the “E” who wrote the letter in Time Cut was Emmy. In Lucy’s original timeline, Emmy was the third person killed by the Sweetly Slasher after Brian and Val, but Summer and Lucy ultimately interfered and prevented her murder. After saving her life in the time travel movie, Lucy realizes that Summer and Emmy had romantic feelings for one another, which then leads her to recognize that it was actually Emmy who wrote the letter to Summer.

In its runtime of an hour and a half, Time Cut plays many songs that immerse viewers into its mid-aughts timeline and effectively instill nostalgia.

Summer clarifies that Emmy wrote the letter because the two had both agreed to come out about their sexualities to their parents. However, while Emmy held up her end of the deal, Summer admitted that she was too afraid and backed out. “I’m free” was Emmy’s way of saying that she’s finally able to be open about her sexuality and be herself, whereas Summer is still hiding this important part of herself and will never feel that freedom. “You’ll regret this” wasn’t actually a threat, but rather a warning that Summer will regret not being truthful about her feelings.

Summer Kisses Emmy, But Do They Stay Together?

Before Time Cut’s ending, Summer decides to officially come out at the party by kissing Emmy in front of her classmates. It’s implied that she also then came out to her parents, but Lucy doesn’t reveal when this happened in her final voiceover. Ultimately, it’s safe to assume that Emmy and Summer did continue dating after taking down the Sweetly Slasher in the new 2003 timeline.

Though Emmy was also killed in the original timeline,
Time Cut
doesn’t reveal the butterfly effect of her survival in the alternate 2024 timeline.

However, Lucy’s brief trip back to 2024 at the end of Time Cut doesn’t confirm whether Summer is still with Emmy 21 years later – only that she doesn’t have a husband. With Lucy choosing to stay in the 2003 timeline, Summer will continue to have a supportive sister as she embarks on an openly romantic relationship with Emmy or, if they break up, another person in the future. In Time Cut‘s new timeline, Summer makes sure she won’t regret her choice and gets to be “free” with Emmy or on her own after the 2024 horror movie.
