T.J. Holmes has made a safe return to the world of marathon running.
After suffering an Achilles injury and subsequently taken to the hospital during the Chicago Marathon on October 13, Holmes, 47, was seen grinning alongside Amy Robach at the New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 3.
Posing with Jennifer Connelly, who also competed in Sunday’s event, and Robach, 51, for a selfie, Holmes appeared to have nailed his self-proclaimed “redemption run.”
Holmes posted several significant moments from the day via Instagram Stories on Sunday, documenting the bus ride to the event’s starting line, a stretching exercise, the starting line itself, his white and neon orange Nike trainers and a sea of fellow participants.
Robach, who has been dating Holmes since 2022, also attended Sunday’s event, posting an Instagram Story that captured the sun rising and read, “Staten Island Bound.” It is unclear where Robach competed in the race or just served as support for Holmes.
Holmes’ return to marathons comes after he and Robach revealed that Holmes’ left Achilles “gave out” during the 21st mile of the Chicago Marathon less than one month prior. An Instagram Story from Robach at the time included a photo of her partner’s leg strapped to a stretcher inside an ambulance.

Three hours after Robach’s post, Holmes shared an update himself via Instagram, posting a photo looking exhausted on the stretcher and covered at the waist with a blanket. A second snap in his Instagram carousel showed his legs strapped in, while an additional video, seemingly filmed by Robach, showed Holmes listening to instructions provided by an emergency officer who was caring for him.
The pair revealed on the October 14 episode of their “Amy & T.J.” podcast that the Chicago Marathon started out rocky. They recalled not having any food, water or bathroom breaks before the race began because they had trouble finding their tent.
Despite the hiccups, the couple felt good to start, however, things took a turn for the worst when Holmes said he nearly collided with another participant.
“I catch myself with my right leg going down and, when I do it, I immediately feel the tweak in my right hip and kind of my right buttcheek,” he recalled, noting that he suffered a previous issue with his IT band.
Holmes ran a few more miles before Robach noticed that he was struggling. “You were literally grunting in pain,” she said during the episode. “That was something completely new to me. I thought, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe he’s in that much pain.’”
Holmes also detailed how determined he was to get moving in the New York event as a result of what he couldn’t achieve in Chicago. “I cannot wait to get back out there because I’m so frustrated with what happened here in Chicago,” he said on the podcast.
