The Berlin Film Festival has announced to permanently delete its social media handle from Twitter. The festival, which made its presence on the social media platform 15 years ago, has more than 133.9K followers.

The Berlin Film Festival, which is set to celebrate its 75th edition from February 13 to 24, 2025, announced its farewell from the social media platform on Monday.

Taking its decision to the same social media platform, The Berlin Film Festival wrote, “The Berlinale has decided to say goodbye to X on Dec 31, 2024. Thank you for following us here all these years. Stay connected with all things Berlinale on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and our website. See you there!  #Berlinale.”

The reason behind this sudden decision has been kept under wraps; however, this came after long-time concerns about a surge in disinformation and abusive content on the social media platform since Elon Musk took ownership of the social media platform. X, which was initially known as Twitter, was acquired by Musk and he soon introduced the name change.

Meanwhile, in recent weeks, the platform has continuously posted photographs and descriptions that showcase its support for Donald Trump amid the presidential election. Moreover, this would be Trump’s second bid in the US Elections.

The film festival quit X came almost a year after Venice Film Festival artistic director Alberto Barbera bid his farewell to the social media platform. However, the film’s parent body, the Venice Biennale, continues to make its presence on social media posts.

Following his decision, he shared a social media post that said, “After the latest statements by the owner of Twitter (or rather, sorry, of X) , I have definitely lost the desire (already weakened) to remain on a platform, the objectives and purposes of which I no longer share.”
