People travelling from the UK to Greece and other countries have been issued warnings from the Foreign Office. An initial update from foreign affairs experts on Wednesday is urging people to be careful if they are heading abroad due to dangerous weather conditions in some parts of the world.
A post on X, formerly Twitter, reads: “If you’re heading to tropical regions, be aware of typhoons and hurricanes. Always check the latest weather updates and stay safe!”. Further guidance on Gov.uk warns that natural hazards and extreme weather events, such as these, can not only cause serious damage but can also “disrupt a country’s infrastructure, including buildings, roads and bridges, water supplies, drains and communications”, and adds that the “effects can be more extreme and serious if this infrastructure has not been designed properly to withstand these events, or to protect you while they are taking place.”
In a second warning issued later today, the Foreign Office urged football fans heading to Athens to also take caution and to listen to what officials have to say.
Travel experts say that due to an upcoming game, people need to think of three things. They explain that “Athens will host the UEFA Europa League on Thursday 7 November between OLYMPIACOS and RANGERS FC.”
If you are travelling to Athens for the match, you should:
plan your movement around the city to arrive at the stadium well in advance of the match kick-off
follow the instructions of the local authorities
take care of your personal possessions including passports, especially in crowds and on public transport
More guidance and key information can be found on the official Rangers’ website here with experts urging people to stay up-to-date with the latest information. The football team on their website adds: “Supporters travelling for Thursday’s UEFA Europa League match against Olympiacos should be aware of the following information.”
