The 25th annual Latin Grammy Awards kicked off on Thursday (Nov. 14) with a joyful medley from Carlos Vives, the Latin Recording Academy’s Person of the Year, performing a medley that included hits like “Fruta Fresca,” “La Bicicleta” and “The Tierra del Olvido” that put everyone on their feet.
The first prize of the night, in the new category of best contemporary Mexican music album, went to Carín León for Boca Chueca, Vol. 1.
A few hours before, at the Latin Grammy Premiere — where most of the awards were presented — Edgar Barrera and Nathy Peluso won three trophies each. Barrera was named songwriter of the year award, which he also received in 2023. He also won producer of the year and best regional Mexican song along with Keytin as the authors of Grupo Frontera and Grupo Firme’s “El Amor de su Vida.”
“Thanks to the Academy for once again giving me this recognition,” said the Mexican hitmaker upon receiving the first of his trophies, which he dedicated to his four-week-old daughter. “It is a category that did not exist two years ago and that thanks to songwriters before me like Manuel Alejandro, like Roberto Cantoral, Kike Santander, Estéfano — who showed that the work of a songwriter is just as important as that of an artist — it is thanks to them that I am standing here, receiving this award.”
Peluso’s awards included best long-form video for Grasa, best alternative song for “El Día que Perdí mi Juventud,” and best rap/hip-hop song for “Aprender a Amar,” both included on her album Grasa.
“Oh, what can I say! I can’t believe this! Wow,” the Argentine star said, evidently emotional upon receiving her third gramophone of the day. After thanking the entire team that was part of Grasa, she added: “Thanks to hip-hop, thanks to poetry, thanks to music for teaching me so much.”
Among other winners, the Venezuelan group Rawayana won the Latin Grammy for best pop song for “Feriado,” and Chiquis won best band album for Diamantes. Feid was there to accept the award for best reggaeton performance for Bad Bunny’s “Perro Negro,” where he is featured, and Fonseca received the best contemporary tropical album award for Tropicalia. The Latin Grammy for best short form music video went to Residente for “313,” featuring Penélope Cruz and Silvia Pérez Cruz.
For its 25th anniversary, the Latin Grammy Awards also incorporated a new field of electronic music and best Latin electronic music performance category, which went to Bizarrap and Shakira for “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53 (Tiësto Remix)”.
For the second year in a row, Barrera leads the list of nominees with nine nods, including songwriter of the year and producer of the year. He is followed by superstars Karol G and Bad Bunny, who each got eight nominations. The nominees for the coveted best new artist prize are Agris, Kevin Aguilar, Darumas, Nicolle Horbath, Latin Mafia, Cacá Magalhães, Os Garotin, Iñigo Quintero, Sofi Saar and Ela Taubert.
The 25th Latin Grammy Awards can be seen on Univision, Galavisión and ViX. Below, find the list of Latin Grammy winners for 2024, which will be updated throughout the ceremony.
