Cemeteries are a new lot type added in The Sims 4: Life & Death. They are important for when a Sim dies, either unexpectedly or planned via your own story. However, cemeteries are also public lots that the living can travel to at any point. They can even be assigned as club hangouts and celebrity hotspots from past expansions. This means that a cemetery should have plenty of upkeep to make it a worthwhile place to visit. Otherwise, the dead may soon become forgotten.

The cemetery lot is most often used for hosting funeral events in The Sims 4. You will need the essentials for both celebrating the life of a Sim and burying them properly. A single pre-made cemetery, Eternal Hollow, is included in The Sims 4: Life & Death. But this might not fit all of your needs. The Sims 4: Cats & Dogs and The Sims 4: Snowy Escape also had graveyard-style areas, but these do not have the outright functionality of a cemetery lot.

How To Make A Cemetery Lot

Going Beyond Required Objects

Cemeteries can be made on any vacant lot, even on worlds outside Ravenwood. However, it may be harder to visit vacation worlds like Batuu or Granite Falls. Preferably, you should use the largest lot size of 64 x 64, but lots that big are extremely rare and may require bulldozing a pre-made structure. However, avoid destroying buildings with important game functionality, like Copperdale High from TS4: High School Years.

The Sims 4: Life & Death allows you to write a will. You need to take care of this while alive, but can affect the next generation.

As with all other lots, editing is done in Build Mode in TS4. This can be done either from Manage Worlds or while in Live Mode. Set “cemetery” from the drop-down menu in the upper left corner. Since it is a public lot, no Simoleons are required for any costs.

At minimum, a cemetery requires
one headstone or urn
,
one bench
,
one trash can
, and
one toile
, but more objects will enhance the cemetery.
TS4
also recommends a
gravesite
, a
crypt
, and a
casket
.

However, just having the basic objects can make this tedious for those attending funerals. Consider including items to restore a Sim’s basic needs in TS4. This can include items like a chess set for fun, a sink or shower for hygiene, and bed or coffee machine for energy. If Sims get hungry, it is a good idea to have vending machines or a fridge for easy-to-make Sims 4 recipes. The cemetery I built in Del Sol Valley even included celebrity-themed items, like the video station and exotic water garden.

Maintaining A Crowded Cemetery

Dealing With Too Many Dead Sims

As more Sims perish, you may soon begin to run out of adequate space in The Sims 4: Life & Death. The biggest annoyances are gravesites, which take up a full 4×4 grid each. You could make more cemetery lots to fit more gravesites, but that is also finite.

Instead, opt to make cemeteries multi-level with both an upward structure and a basement. Any lot can have both three levels above ground and four below ground for a total of eight floors. To take things even further than the game typically allows, making use of cheat codes is a good way of stacking lots of objects together.

Switching To Urns

One of the best ways of saving space is to convert headstones into urns. This should happen automatically if you drag an occupied headstone indoors. However, an empty headstone will need to be deleted and replaced in Build Mode. The advantage of urns is that they can be placed on surfaces, like desks, shelves, and display cases. Build items from The Sims 4: Jungle Adventure can be one of the best means of displaying any collection, even deceased Sim remains.

Another method to avoid overcrowding is to not keep every dead Sim at a cemetery. Some families might want to be close to their loved ones, allowing for urns and headstones on their residential lot. You can also take a more morbid approach in The Sims 4: simply abandon the Sim exactly where they died. This can leave a warning at dangerous places, like pools where many have drowned or gardens overrun with flesh-eating cowplants, and ultimately avoid the need to build an over-crowded cemetery in The Sims 4.
