Though the first movie was a mixed bag, the success of video game movies in recent years has spurred Sony to green-light Uncharted 2. The Uncharted movie is more or less an origin story for Tom Holland’s live-action Nathan Drake, and a prequel to his treasure-hunting adventures in future big-screen adaptations of the hit games. While Uncharted closes out its story, the film’s ending certainly lays the groundwork for a possible sequel, with Uncharted 2 finally being announced several years later.
After being left behind by his older brother Sam, Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) grows up on his own before being thrown into the dangerous world of treasure hunting by Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg). Sully recruits Nate to help him find the lost golden artifacts of Magellan before Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas) can get to them first. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the movie scored extraordinarily well among audiences. With that success, the demand for a follow-up has been high, and Sony is gearing up to deliver Uncharted 2 in the future.

The Producer Provided A Timeline Update
Six months after a sequel was officially confirmed by Sony, there is still no news on the production or release of the project – but producer Charles Roven has now provided a hopeful update on its progress (as of December 2024):
We’re working on a script, but we’re going to have to wait now for Chris Nolan’s movie that Tom and Zendaya are doing. And then right after that, he and Zendaya are doing
Spider-Man
. I think both those movies are releasing on the same day or the week after each other or something. It’s another potential Barbenheimer.
While this may come as a disappointment (as there is no concrete filming window set) it does confirm that progress is moving forward on the project – and seemingly confirms that Holland will be returning to his role as Nathan Drake. Holland’s involvement in the sequel was assumed (as he is the lead!), but had not yet been officially confirmed. And while this is still not an official confirmation, if production is based around his schedule, it means that he is returning.
Uncharted 2 Is Confirmed
Sony Confirmed The Sequel In June 2024
Though it took over two years for the news to finally be revealed, Sony announced in June 2024 that they were developing a sequel to their 2022 video game hit. Months after Mark Wahlberg seemingly confirmed the sequel was imminent, the latest news reveals that Sony has green-lit Uncharted 2. Though many details remain unknown, Sony announced at the annual CineEurope convention that they were developing a follow-up to their popular video game adaptation. It’s unclear if any of the original cast members will reprise their roles, and it hasn’t been officially confirmed that Tom Holland will play Nathan Drake once again. However, as the most recent news shows, production is being based on his schedule, so it looks like Holland is going to become Drake for at least one more film.
Sony hasn’t provided a production or release timeline for the sequel yet either.
Uncharted 2 Cast
None of the actors are officially confirmed – yet.
The Uncharted 2 cast is unconfirmed as of now, but there are some obvious guesses. Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg would be the most likely returning cast members as Nathan Drake and Sully, respectively. And while Holland has not been officially confirmed as returning, producer comments about the filming schedule include reference to Holland’s acting schedule, so presumably he will be part of the project. Sophia Ali will also likely return, especially since Chloe Frazer’s story was left hanging at the end.
Antonio Banderas and Tati Gabrielle probably won’t return, considering their characters died in the film. It’s possible Pilou Asbæk, who appeared in Uncharted‘s credits scene, will play a bigger role in the sequel alongside whoever might be cast as the adult version of Sam Drake. Uncharted 2 could also introduce Elena Fisher, Nate’s future wife in the games.
The most logical cast of Uncharted 2 could include:
Actor
Uncharted Role
Tom Holland
Nathan Drake
Mark Wahlberg
Victor “Sully” Sullivan
Sophia Ali
Chloe Frazer
Pilou Asbæk
Gage
Uncharted 2 Story Details
Will The Sequel Stick To The Story Of The Games?
The Uncharted 2 story has already been teased in the first Uncharted movie with some last-minute reveals. The ending of Uncharted teases that Sam Drake, Nate’s brother, is still very much alive and in prison. While it’s unclear where in the world he is, revealing Sam is not dead sets up a sequel and could continue Nate’s efforts in trying to find him. Sam may be more integrated into the story, and his return could set up his and Nate’s next adventure, as well as answer the question regarding how he survived despite being allegedly shot.
What’s more, Uncharted’s ending introduces Gage, a character who works for Roman, one of the villains from the video games. Gage is deeply interested in acquiring Nate’s ring, which belonged to Sir Francis Drake. Uncharted 2 could delve into the mystery of Nate’s supposed ancestor, leading to another adventurous treasure hunt that is a bit more personal than the one in the first film.
Uncharted 2 is the unconfirmed sequel to the 2022 action film, Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg.
