New Year’s Eve celebrations will be wet and windy for most of the UK as weather warnings have been issued across the country.

The Met Office has issued a rare amber and six yellow warnings ahead of celebrations this evening, with events already being cancelled.

Those in the north of England can expect to see gusts of up to 60mph this evening, with another warning for rain stretching from Lancashire to Cheshire.

Scotland will see the worst of the weather, with an amber weather warning for rain in place due to the risk of flooding.

Hogmanay in the centre of Edinburgh, described as ‘one of the greatest outdoor celebrations of New Year’s Eve in the world’, was cancelled yesterday.

The West Midlands will also be soaked as a yellow warning for rain covers Stoke-on-Trent and other northern parts of the region.

Londoners will also be feeling the bad weather, with wind warnings in place from the early hours of January 1.

Most of Wales will see heavy rain today and tomorrow, and Northern Ireland will also see strong winds this evening.

Much of the south of England will see wet and windy conditions as the poor weather travels down, with yellow warnings in place across the south east and south west across New Year’s Day.

Senior Met Office forecaster Craig Snell said: ‘Moving into New Year’s Eve, another system moves in from the Atlantic, again, Scotland bearing the brunt of this one with some further heavy rain and snow and strong winds.

‘The main bit of advice from the Met Office over the coming days is, with the celebrations and people on the move throughout the new year and Hogmanay period, is the keep checking the forecast and to stay up to date with that.’
