Nintendo Announces A LEGO Version Of Another Classic Console Coming In October

As Nintendo fans wait for the long-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, the prolific gaming company has announced a new collaboration with LEGO, this time involving perhaps their most classic handheld console. In October 2025, long-time Nintendo fans and enthusiasts will get the chance to build the original Game Boy.

Nintendo announced the collaboration with LEGO on Twitter with a teaser video showcasing a few of the LEGO pieces that will make up the Game Boy. The video also confirms a release window of October 2025, although details like a specific date and price remain forthcoming.

This is far from the first collaboration between the iconic entertainment companies, as LEGO and Nintendo previously released a LEGO set of the NES, along with Mario, Zelda, and Animal Crossing sets. While this isn’t the big Nintendo news most fans were looking forward to in 2025, which would be an official reveal of the Switch 2, Nintendo is no stranger to using nostalgia to excite their audience and give a unique way to engage with older games.

The LEGO Game Boy Will Recreate An Iconic Handheld

While Nintendo showed off some of the classic parts of the Game Boy as LEGO pieces, including the iconic purple buttons and directional pad, other details were scarce. There’s no word on the price of this set or how many bricks it’ll take to recreate the handheld. A LEGO version of the Nintendo Entertainment System released in 2020 featured a TV build with a mechanical function to simulate Mario running and jumping, but whether the Game Boy will be able to recreate functions in a smaller scale remains to be seen.

The 8-bit handheld was released around the globe in 1989 and began a handheld lineage including successors that range from the Game Boy Advance to the Nintendo Switch. Iconic games on the Game Boy include Pokémon Red & Blue, Tetris, and the Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. Famously, games on the original Game Boy were monochrome, and it wasn’t until the 1998 release of the Game Boy Color that video games began to have a color palette on the handheld. Based on the teaser, the LEGO version of the Game Boy will presumably be modeled after the original monochrome version.

And That Limits The Potential Audience

2025 is shaping up to be a fantastic year for Nintendo fans, and the LEGO Game Boy certainly adds to the list of exciting known announcements. Again, it’s not the big console release everyone wants from the company in the fall, but it does complement Nintendo’s slate for enthusiasts of Nintendo history and retro games in general. It also continues a strong partnership with LEGO that goes beyond sets that simply recreate iconic games like Super Mario World.

However, the audience of enthusiasts has its limits, and Nintendo fans more interested in actually playing games on a retro system might look elsewhere. Original hardware can be purchased affordably on the aftermarket, and some third-party consoles that do a good job of emulating Game Boy games. The ModRetro Chromatic, for example, takes a careful approach to recreating the feeling of playing Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles with just a directional pad and two buttons. While the LEGO Game Boy is an exciting Nintendo announcement, it’s definitely for a particular niche.
