EDF Energy is giving customers an ‘unlimited’ free £50 discount off their energy bills as part of a rewards scheme.

The energy supplier, which serves more than five million UK households, is giving away the freebie every time a customer refers a friend.

EDF customers can find an exclusive link in the online account which they can then share to as many friends and family members as they like.

Every time someone signs up to EDF Energy using that unique referral link, the supplier will give both you and your friend £50 free credit on your energy account.

There is no limit to the number of people you can share the referral link with and you’ll get a £50 reward every time someone switches to EDF. It means that if you get five friends to sign up via your referral link you’ll earn £250 worth of free energy credit, and if you get as many as 10 to sign up you’ll get a whopping £500.

You can share the referral link via email, WhatsApp or on your social media accounts, but EDF warns there are a few restrictions on who you give the link to.

It says: “The recipient must be referred to EDF through the referrer’s unique referral URL and use the referral link to sign up as an EDF residential supply customer for the supply of electricity or gas.

“If the recipient does not use the referral link to sign up we will be unable to match the reward back to you and no reward will be paid to either the referrer or the recipient. The referral link can be found in your EDF online account.

“Your referral link should only be shared with friends or family. If we suspect you are using the scheme for commercial purposes or sending your referral link to people not known to you, we reserve the right to refuse to transfer the reward to the referrer and the recipient.

“Before sharing your referral link with friends or family, you should consider whether they will be interested in the scheme and only share the referral link with those who will be interested.”

You and your friend will automatically receive the £50 credit once they have successfully switched to EDF and their first Direct Debit has been paid.

The supplier says this typically takes around four weeks but you’ll receive a notification email to let you know your account has been credited. If you or your friend close your EDF account before the credit is applied then the referral will be cancelled.

EDF adds: “If your friend uses your referral link but is unsure if they want to switch straight away, they will be emailed a copy of their quote from us so they can review it in their own time and decide to switch later if they want to.

“If they decide they want to go ahead with their switch, then they will need to complete a new quote using your referral link, this way you’ll both receive the credit automatically.”
