A mouthwatering clash between Djelo, Protektorat and Pic D’orhy in the Fleur de Lys Chase at Windsor on the final day of the Berkshire Winter Million Festival.
3.05 Windsor – Djelo, Protektorat and Pic D’Orhy clash in Fleur de Lys Chase
A stellar renewal of this feature Fleur de Lys Chase see’s Ryanair Chase winner Protektorat headline a field of eight.
Dan Skelton’s ten-year-old is yet to show his best form this season and, having finished six lengths behind the reopposing Djelo, he will need to step forward with the return to a left-handed track a plus.
The Venetia Williams-trained Djelo produced a career-best effort when claiming the Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon last month and he rates a huge danger as he steps up in trip.
Paul Nicholls’ Pic D’Orhy claimed the 1965 Chase at Ascot in November before missing his Kempton engagement due to bad weather. This looks an ideal spot for him and a bold bid is expected under Harry Cobden.
1.55 Windsor – Matata and Unexpected Party fancied
The Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained Matata will top the weights under new pilot JJ Slevin. A keen going sort, he should find this track to his liking but he will have to defy a career-high mark to strike in this Fitzdares Great Park Handicap Chase over two miles.
Grand Annual winner Unexpected Party drops back into handicap company having been outclassed in the Shloer Chase at Cheltenham. He would have each-way claims on the pick of his form for the Skelton team.
Others to note include Paul Nicholls’ Sans Bruit, while Harper’s Brook bids to follow up his promising Wetherby success.
12.10 Windsor – Jingko Blue headlines a field of three
Nicky Henderson’s six-year-old Jingko Blue produced a super round of jumping when winning a strong novices’ handicap on his fencing debut at Uttoxeter and this looks a good opportunity for him to make it 2-2 in this re-arranged Grade 2 Hampton Novices’ Chase.
Philip Hobbs and Johnson White’s Lowry’s Bar has won two of his three chasing starts and he already looks a much better chaser than he was a hurdler. He will hope to make use of that jumping experience and expose any weakness in the likely favourite from Seven Barrows.
Having been declared a non-runner on Friday, Johnnywho will be more at home over this extra distance but will need to jump with more enthusiasm than his recent Ascot effort.
Best of the rest
The promising Jubilee Alpha goes toe-to-toe with Harry Derham’s Barrabool in the Fitzdares Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle over (12.45pm) over two miles at Windsor, with Bluey also in the mix for Emma Lavelle’s yard.
At 1.20pm, Guard Duty looks the one to watch having been defeated by just a next slightly down in trip at Lingfield the last day. Gavin Sheehan’s mount may go one better in this Winter Million Novices’ Handicap Hurdle, although Officer Of State could pose a challenge if he returns to his best.
Jipcot will be popular with punters for the Weatherbys Racing Bank Handicap Hurdle after his impressive display under Kielan Woods at Newbury, although it would be dangerous to discount the returning Minella Missile.
Internationally speaking, set your alarms to follow Zac Purton’s continued pursuit of the all-time Hong Kong jockey winners record, currently held by Douglas Whyte. Purton sits just three behind the magic milestone of 1813 successes, and could make history this morning at Sha Tin.
At 7am, Purton gets the ride on Hong Kong Sprint king Ka Ying Rising in the Group One Centenary Sprint Cup, who has amassed eight straight victories for David Hayes. Afterwards, it’s all eyes on the Stewards’ Cup at 8.05am, with James McDonald’s mount Voyage Bubble the hot favourite to claim the £748,000 pot.
