You might use this phrase quite regularly, but its true meaning will leave you flabbergasted. A social media user recently uploaded a video on TikTok explaining the meaning behind some commonly used phrases.

Among them was ‘Dutch Courage’, which often carries a slightly humorous or ironic undertone, implying that the courage is not genuine but rather artificially induced by the effects of alcohol.

TikTok user @learnenglishwithidioms shared a one-minute-long video that explores the fascinating history behind common old phrases and idioms used in daily life.

The social media user explained during the video: “Back in 1600s, British soldiers noticed Dutch troops drinking ‘Jenever,’ a strong gin, before the battle. Inspired, they started doing the same for a boost of bravery.

“However, some Brits mocked the Dutch, claiming they needed alcohol to fight.

“Either way, this boozy bravery became known as ‘Dutch courage’.”

The term likely arose in the 17th century during periods of conflict between the English and the Dutch, such as the Anglo-Dutch Wars.

At present, the phrase is used colloquially and is generally detached from its historical context.

It’s commonly employed to describe someone who drinks alcohol to gain the confidence to do something, such as speaking in public, approaching someone, or facing a challenging situation.

It’s said to have stemmed from English soldiers observing Dutch counterparts drinking spirits like gin before battle to steady their nerves. This may have been interpreted as relying on alcohol for bravery.

Another theory ties it to the rivalry and cultural stereotyping between the English and the Dutch at the time.

However, the video has received a mixed reaction from the online community. While some were left astonished to find its meaning, many claimed it was not the right reason behind the phrase.

One user wrote: “Thank you. That was really interesting.”

A second user commented: “So interesting.”

But, another user commented: “Dutch courage comes from the plague of London, the dutch was the only one’s who would sail into London to drop off their goods. To this day, they have a free passage down the Thames.”

A fourth user agreed and said: “Dutch courage came from the times when the plague was rife, only the Dutch would come to London on ships to deliver food.”
