If you are attempting to dig yourself out of a hole with today’s Connections puzzle, there are ways to start pulling yourself up. There was an interesting struggle I had with the end of the puzzle, but it all worked out. There is also a big fake category that I was kind of surprised was not correct at first, but it became clear why later. If you are struggling like I was, I have all the tips you need to get you through the end of the puzzle without losing.
If you want a different kind of puzzle but still want to test both your pop culture and language knowledge, you should test out the NYT’s Strands puzzle. It is your favorite word search with the twist that you don’t know what words you are searching for. It may sound unintuitive, but the more you guess, the more hints you have, and you will be able to start solving puzzles faster than you think you’ll be able to as it is quite the fun one. The only question is how many hints you will use before the end.
Today’s Connections Category Hints
JANUARY 22 #591
If you are here for a few hints, then you are exactly in the right place. There are a few different tricky categories and one big red herring of four words that you might think go in their own category. As always, that depends on your own familiarity with both the subjects in the puzzle and the ones that only look like they are in the puzzle. The more you associate the words with something in particular, the more it is likely you will have to step back and see if you are missing something else.
One category is about four things that all take place in the same location
One category is about what happens when you start looking for buried treasure
One category is about a group that all has the same outerwear
One category is about four words that come before a different word in a phrase – that word is a direction

TYPES OF ACADEMIC COURSES
DISCUSSION
LAB
LECTURE
SEMINAR
This category was a little difficult at first – not because I am not way too familiar with the types of academic courses, but because I had put LAB in several other possible categories. I thought it could be part of the fully formed 4-word category with dog breed nicknames, but I also thought it could be part of the robe-wearing people as a LAB coat greatly resembles a robe. Neither was right in the end, and I did eventually get the right answer.

RESULTS OF SOME DIGGING
DITCH
HOLE
PIT
TRENCH
As an archaeologist, I do have a lot of experience with digging. However, I was able to figure this one out after getting rid of the dog guess. PIT could have easily been there, but when it was clear that wasn’t a category, it was simpler to reorganize the words and see that there were a lot of words that meant something like a HOLE. TRENCH was less hole-like, but it was the only word left that had anything to do with dirt or the ground.

ONES WEARING ROBES
BOXER
JUDGE
MONK
WIZARD
This one did mess with me a little bit, as I wasn’t sure which of the professions they wanted here. BOXER was originally in the dog category, while both LAWYER and LAB made an appearance here at least once. It made it a very close call at the end of the puzzle as to what was going to happen, but luckily I got the right combination right at the end and avoided a catastrophe.

BATTER
BOTTOMS
CHIN
LAWYER
This one didn’t matter as much because I came to it last, but I did have CHIN with the rest of the dogs. This was unfortunate and a little funny because there was a dog in each category which made for an interesting conundrum after I got that guess wrong. Meanwhile, a LAWYER might not wear robes all the time, but there could be instances in which they do and BOXER was not registering as a person at the time that I guessed. In the end, I won so it didn’t matter quite as much.
