Warning: Major spoilers for The Night Agent season 2 finale “Divergence” below! The Night Agent season 2 ends with some major reveals – and sets up Peter’s next big mission. The finale “Divergence” opens with Peter (Gabriel Basso) leading a raid on the evacuated UN building, where Markus (Michael Malarkey) planted canisters of K.X. gas. While the raid succeeds in seizing all the canisters, Markus is able to escape. Peter and Rose (Luciane Buchanan) later track him down to the girlfriend of an associate, and after a tense standoff, Peter shoots Markus dead and recovers the last canister.

The Night Agent’s season 2 finale then sees Peter handing himself to Night Action after stealing a UN file for “intelligence broker” Jacob Monroe (Louis Herthum). Facing prison time, he says goodbye to Rose for good. The show skips ahead in time, revealing Noor (Arienne Mandi) and her mother were granted asylum and Rose went back to her job with ADverse. The episode closes with Peter’s boss Catherine (Amanda Warren) offering the disgraced agent a deal: work as a mole for Monroe (Louis Herthum) and uncover his links to the incoming President, and the charges against him will be wiped.

Why Catherine Wants Peter To Work For Jacob Monroe (Without Night Action Knowing)

Monroe will become the main threat of season 3

Monroe is a shadowy figure pulling strings throughout The Night Agent season 2. He was the one who acquired the Foxglove information for Bala, and Peter is later forced to cut a deal with Monroe in order to save Rose’s life. This weighs heavily on Peter, given that his own father was a traitor. Once Rose is safe and the threat neutralized, Peter confesses to what he’s done and is prepared to face the consequences. Catherine sees a way to use Peter to her advantage, which is finding out the exact nature of Monroe’s relationship with the incoming President.

The Night Agent Season 1 Recap: 10 Things You Need To Remember Before Season 2

The Night Agent season 1 included so many twists and turns that need to be remembered, especially given how some key events directly set up season 2.

The opening of “Divergence” includes a flashback to eight years in the past, where Monroe meets Hagan (Ward Horton), the man he will later mold into a Presidential candidate. With Hagan’s opponent Knox dropping out late in the race, Hagan is essentially guaranteed to win. Catherine worries that with Monroe backing Hagan, every piece of classified intel that crosses his desk will be up for sale to the highest bidder.

Putting Peter undercover is the only way to learn what Monroe’s relationship with the sitting President is. By stealing the UN file for Monroe, Peter had a direct hand in swaying the election, so it’s his responsibility to make things right. Catherine and Peter will be doing this without Night Action’s approval too, since the consequences of failure will be high.

How Peter & Rose Stopped The Foxglove Attack

The main threat of The Night Agent season 2 is K.X. gas, which was created as part of a U.S. government program dubbed Foxglove. This involved chemicals being weaponized so that vaccines could be created for them. In theory, this was a preventative measure, in case terrorists had the same thought. K.X. gas was the most dangerous weapon produced by that program before it was shuttered, and episode 7 sees the weapon’s creator and Rose being kidnapped by war criminal Viktor Bala’s crew.

They are forced to create a new batch of K.X., which was intended to be unleashed inside the UN building. After Peter gets the info from Monroe about where the gas is being created, he rescues Rose and the other hostages. This leads into The Night Agent’s season 2 finale, where the UN building is raided as Bala’s people plant K.X. canisters.

Why Peter Is Taken Into Custody By Catherine (& Why She Always Had Trouble Trusting Him)

Peter’s good intentions cost him dearly in “Divergence”

Peter is well aware he’s making a deal with the devil when he makes a deal with Monroe. He might be focused on saving Rose, but Monroe makes it clear the true price of the exchange will be that Peter will be “owned” by him in the aftermath. This is why he confessed everything to Catherine and Night Action and was willing to face prison time in the aftermath, and why he was taken into custody after Markus is killed.

Terminator 2 star Robert Patrick makes a brief cameo as Catherine’s boss during a flashback in The Night Agent episode 6 “A Good Agent.”

Catherine is initially ice cold to Peter when The Night Agent’s second season opens, believing he’s not experienced or skilled enough. She later comes to admire his skills, and in the final scenes, Catherine reveals why she was hesitant to trust him: his father. Peter’s late father was a traitor, and Catherine was one of the agents who exposed his misdeeds years before. More than that, the investigation led to the death of her former partner, so her doubts about Peter feel (somewhat) understandable.

How Jacob Monroe Manipulated The Upcoming Presidential Election With Peter’s Help

Monroe has created a puppet President

A Presidential election is brewing in the background throughout The Night Agent’s second season, with candidates Knox and Hagan battling it out. The finale sees Knox abruptly quitting the race, essentially making Hagan the President. This goes back to the job Peter did for Monroe, which involved sneaking into the UN and stealing a certain file from the UN Secretary-General. Catherine later reveals this file linked Knox to both Foxglove and the selling of chemical weapons to Bala.

Bala used these weapons on his own people and is seeking revenge on America by attempting to deploy K.X. at the UN. Knox’s connection to the Bala case had been kept quiet, but Monroe used the file to force him to drop out. So, in a very real way, Peter stealing the file helped Monroe secure the White House and the Presidency. This could give the broker access to all sorts of classified military material – which is obviously very bad news.

Is Peter & Rose’s Relationship Over For Good?

The Night Agent’s Will They/Won’t They romance continues

The Night Agent season 1 ended with Peter and Rose calling it quits, as the former left to become a Night Action agent. Rose gets sucked into his latest mission almost a year later, and they rekindle their old romance in the process. Peter says his goodbye in the finale as he’s taken into custody, and tells Rose she needs to keep away from him.

While talking with Noor in the aftermath, Rose confirms she’s focused on her job and decides it’s best to leave Peter in the past. This suggests their relationship is over for good – but that’s before Peter is released by Catherine so he can continue to work with Monroe. Rose will almost certainly return when The Night Agent season 3 happens, so there is every chance she and Peter can still figure things out.

What Happens To Noor After Helping Peter At The UN One Last Time

The Night Agent gives Noor a bittersweet ending

Noor works at the Iranian embassy and spends the first half of the season trying to find intel she can give to the CIA; in exchange, she wants asylum for her mother and brother. Tragically, Noor’s brother is killed when Night Action tries to extract him and her mother from Iran. Noor goes through hell throughout season 2 – especially after the embassy’s intense head of security Javad (Keon Alexander) learns of her involvement.

The Night Agent season 2’s final scenes reveal Noor and her mother have become US citizens and moved to Illinois…

Noor later escapes him in the finale, after she helps Peter gain entry to the UN. The final scenes reveal Noor and her mother have become US citizens and moved to Illinois. She and Rose also meet up again, with Rose promising to help her out and be a friend if she needs it.

What Will Happen To Javad After The Ambassador Incriminates Him?

The Night Agent season 2’s sub-villain gets his just desserts

Javad initially serves as a charming love interest for Noor – but his coldness is soon revealed. Javad becomes increasingly brash and violent as he learns of Noor’s connection with the Americans, vowing to get her sent back to Iran while trying to capture Peter for his sneaky mission inside the embassy. Javad’s methods also create friction with Ambassador Abbas, especially involving a French report on Iranian dissidents living abroad – a list that Abbas’ own daughter is a part of.

Javad’s obsession with destroying Noor proves his undoing, as there is plenty of surveillance camera footage of him and Noor talking intimately. With this, the ambassador is able to incriminate Javad, stating he and Noor must have been working together leaking information to the Americans. He is arrested, and will presumably be sent back to Iran to face punishment.

How The Night Agent Season 2’s Ending Sets Up Season 3

Night Action will be up against the White House itself in season 3

While the second season tells its own complete story, it really lays the groundwork for The Night Agent season 3. It ends with the implication that the new President will be under the thumb of Monroe – who has shown a casual disregard for life throughout the series. Peter going undercover with Monroe means he and Night Action will be facing off with the new President too. That said, Hagan has already shown signs of defiance against his supposed master, Monroe, suggesting their partnership won’t be a smooth one either.
