A huge train station in the UK located near an iconic landmark has been named “one of the best in Europe”.

Experts at the Washington DC-based Consumer Choice Center ranked dozens of stations across European cities such as London, Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam and Rome.

Among the list, London Bridge station managed to secure a spot in the top 10, reports metro.co.uk

According to the European Railway Station Index 2024, the iconic station scored 85 out of 118 points and was in the tie-ten spot with Leipzig main station.

The index looked at stations that had 30 million or more passengers annually.

Stations were scored across 16 categories, including passenger numbers, ticket office operating hours, ticket variety, train delays, accessibility features, availability of elevators, and the number of shops and restaurants.

Operated by Southern, Southeastern, and Thameslink, the London Bridge station connects the city to destinations such as Brighton, Gatwick Airport, Bedford, and Kent.

Popular landmarks near the station includes The Shard (adjacent to the station), Borough Market, Tower Bridge and The River Thames.

The station recently underwent a £1 billion redevelopment (completed in 2018), improving platforms, concourses, and passenger capacity. The project was aimed at modernizing and expanding one of London’s busiest transport hubs.

The latest station index follows the UK government’s recent confirmation of plans to renationalise Britain’s railways.

However, the experts who created the ranking said they are not convinced that the renationalisation plan will solve Britain’s train woes.

They said: “We remain sceptical that the planned nationalization addresses the fundamental supply-demand disconnect in British railways.

“Renationalising the UK railways under the current plan ‘will leave British consumers with far fewer choices.”
