A 27-year-old woman is alleged to have given birth on the roadside before leaving the child to die.

It is reported to have happened during Songkran Festival – the traditional Thai new year.

The footage begins with a woman doubled over in pain near a parked car.

She can be seen pulling down her clothing and squatting next to the vehicle.

The woman then appears to leave something behind some potted plants before limping away from the scene.

A while later in the six-minute clip, bystanders can be seen looking around in the area where the baby is reported to have been found.

An ambulance and paramedics are reported to have arrived shortly afterwards.

The baby is reported to have been found alive.

While resuscitation efforts were made, the newborn child tragically did not survive.

There was blood on the walls and plants in the area where the baby was found, local media has reported.

The woman, later identified by police as Piyathida, is reported to have been seen seen splashing water with friends while bleeding from her legs.

She claimed she was menstruating when confronted and initially denied being the mother.

Later, she confessed and was taken to hospital.

Piyathida was allegedly intoxicated at the time she was questioned.

Superintendent Phuwadon Aoonpho of Don Mueang Police Station said the woman has not been questioned yet as she is still in hospital.

She remains hospitalised due to significant blood loss.

However, the superintendent sought to reassure the public the woman will be held to account.

Piyathida is said to have two other children – both from different ex-husbands.

Both kids are reportedly being cared for by relatives.

The woman’s 20-year-old friend Am told local media she would no longer remain friends with her.

Am had suspected that Piyathida might be pregnant.

But she denied it and claimed she was just gaining weight.

Other family members have also cut ties with the woman according to Am.

What is the physical toll of childbirth?

CHILDBIRTH takes a significant physical toll on the woman’s body, with effects that vary depending on the type of delivery and individual circumstances.

Immediately after birth, common problems women encounter include extreme pain, exhaustion, postpartum bleeding and perineal trauma, like tearing or an episiotomy during vaginal delivery.

And for cesarean births, recovery consists of healing from the major abdominal surgery to remove the baby.

Hormonal changes can also cause mood swings, breast swelling and hardening because of an oversupply of milk, as well as hair loss in some cases.

In the weeks after childbirth, many women experience pelvic floor weakness, urinary incontinence, or abdominal changes.

Vaginal pain, swelling, and uterine contractions are also common as the body continues to heal from what it was put through during childbirth.

Longer-term effects may include chronic pain and joint issues, to name a few.

Recovery is a journey that often takes several weeks to months, and varies for each woman.
