The 31-year-old was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.
The student was arrested after launching the knife assault on Tuesday near the Françoise Dolto secondary school in Nogent.
They attacked the staff member during a routine bag check which had been set up by police in front of the school.
The victim was rushed to hospital but later died from her injuries.
A spokesperson for the Haute-Marne prefecture told BFMTV: “The attacker was neutralized by the police officers present at the scene.”
A police officer’s hand was also reportedly injured during the arrest due to the student’s blade.
The student, who is reportedly just 15 years old, was taken into custody at the Nogent gendarmerie.
It is currently unclear what his motives were.
The school’s 324 students were put into lockdown.
Random bag searches were authorised in March in order to combat growing violence in schools.
They were increased after a series of violent school attacks, including the death of a 17-year-old high school student in Essonne.
According to figures from the Ministry of National Education, 958 checks of school bags in France have resulted in the seizure of 94 bladed weapons.
France’s Education Minister Elisabeth Borne announced on X that she would attend the scene of the crime.
She expressed “support for the victim and her loved ones”.
The minister said: “I salute the composure and commitment of those who acted to restrain the attacker and protect the students and staff.
“I am going to the scene in support of the entire school community and law enforcement.”
