It was Monday evening, July 28, 2025. People were walking to their homes. Some were getting coffee. The streets were busy, just like any other day.
News broke quickly. There had been a shooting at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. The shooting took place near the building premises with offices like the NFL, Blackstone, and Rudin Management. People were finishing their workday. No one expected what was coming.
As mentioned by the NYPD investigation officer, Jessica Tisch, in the press conference, Shane Devon Tamura, age 27, arrived in his black BMW after crossing several state lines on Monday evening. Around 6:30 p.m. at Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, in the security footage, he looked fully prepared, wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying an assault rifle.
The first person he shot was Officer Didarul Islam. He was a 36-year-old NYPD officer from Bangladesh. He had worked with the police for over three years. And he was also a kind father of two with a third child on the way. He died while trying to protect everyone. People across the city are calling him a hero.
Tamura then shot a security guard, a woman hiding behind a pillar, and a man at the front desk. After that, he went to the 33rd floor. He shot one more person and then ended his own life with the same weapon.
In total, five people died that day, including the shooter. One other person was badly injured but is expected to survive.
So, who was Shane Tamura? He used to play college football but quit early. Friends said he had changed recently. He became quiet and seemed paranoid. Police found a note on him. In it, he wrote about a brain condition called CTE. It happens to people with repeated head injuries and affects how they think. Tamura believed he had this condition.
In his car, police found a handgun, bullets, and some prescription medicines, but no signs of any intoxicating items were found. He had a history of mental health problems.
Till now, the Police are unsure why he chose that building or those people. Some think he was targeting the NFL, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
People who live or work nearby are now scared. Today it happened to someone else, but tomorrow it could be anyone.
We need to do better, we need stronger mental health support, safer buildings, and smarter gun laws. We must care for people before things reach this point. Let us not forget the victims. Let us honor them by choosing action and not waiting for another tragedy to happen.
