What if something you shared with an AI tool showed up on Google for anyone else to see?

That’s exactly what happened to many users of ChatGPT. A feature on ChatGPT that allows people to share their conversations through a public link. But people didn’t realize those links could be picked up by search engines like Google or Bing. This turned private chats into public records, without users even knowing.

Could your private questions become public? Let’s Find Out

OpenAI’s feature in ChatGPT lets users click a “Share” button. After that, they could choose “Create link” to share a conversation. There is also an option to let that chat be discoverable by search engines. It wasn’t turned on by default, but many users didn’t fully understand what it meant.

Once shared, these links could be found by searching on Google using “chatgpt.com/share.” This means strangers could read your chats. Some of these chats included personal things, like job applications, resumes, location details, or even private thoughts.

Even though the chats didn’t show your name or email, people could still connect the dots. In one case, someone shared a resume with enough detail that their LinkedIn profile was easily found.

After this issue was widely noticed, OpenAI confirmed that it had removed the feature, but the share feature is still displaying on its page. The company said this was a short experiment, but it created too many chances for people to share private things by accident.

The biggest problem here is that AI tools don’t know what’s sensitive. They simply respond to what you write. But once that chat is shared, even by mistake, it could live online forever.

Points to Remember to Keep Your Data Safe

Here are a few simple steps you can follow:

Avoid sharing personal information such as your name, address, phone number, and other such details.

Don’t use the share button if any personal data is present in the chat.

Use screenshots or copy-paste text, and avoid sharing links, unless extremely important.

Think twice before sharing anything online. The information that goes to the internet takes a lot of time to discard, so use it wisely.

AI can be helpful, but protecting your privacy is your responsibility. Always stay alert and share with care.
