Cops were joined by river brigade authorities who scrambled to bring the bodies out of the water, Actu17 reported.

According to the local outlet, a source close to the investigation said: “There are three men of African descent and a fourth of North African descent.”

The witness reportedly sounded the alarm after making the gruesome discovery at around 1pm on Wednesday.

Another source said: “At this stage, four separate death investigations have been opened.

“There is currently no evidence to suggest that all four victims died at the same time.”

They added: “An autopsy will be performed this Thursday morning and will shed more light on the circumstances of their deaths.

“There is no evidence to suggest a criminal investigation at this stage.”

Authorities made a series of chilling discoveries after responding to reports that one body had been spotted in the river.

They found a second corpse around 50 metres away from the first one, then a third stuck in branches in the river, and then a fourth drifting with the current, Le Parisien reported.

Mayor of Choisy-le-Roi, Tonino Panetta told the local outlet that “the bodies were in an advanced state of degradation”.

This indicated “that they must have been in the water for several days”, he added.

The mayor said: “They could have probably drifted quite far.”

One of the bodies was reportedly fully naked, while the others were clothed.

The local Choisy-le-Roi police are continuing the probe the four mysterious deaths.

The bodies have been sent to the Paris Institute of Forensic Medicine for identification and autopsies.

All four had reportedly been submerged in the river for several days – but it is still unclear when each of them died exactly.

The passerby who sounded the alarm was travelling on the RER C when he spotted a body floating below as his train passed through the area.
