THE case of Amanda Knox has been debated for over two decades after she was wrongfully accused of murder.

Knox makes headlines again, 18 years after the murder of Meredith Kercher took place, with the launch of the new eight-part drama series documenting the relentless fight of the titular figure.

While the truth behind the case took years to come to light, the series looks at why authorities and the world stood so firmly in the false judgment.

For almost four years, Knox was imprisoned for the murder which took place while Knox was on a study abroad year in Perugia, Italy.

The series will show how Amanda Knox was eventually acquitted for the murder of Meredith Kercher, who was stabbed multiple times, sexually assaulted, and had her throat cut in her bedroom.

Who killed Meredith Kercher?

At the time of the murder, Knox was dating Raffaele Sollecito, and both were charged and later imprisoned for the murder, alongside Knox’s employer, Patrick Lumumba.

However, while the three were in prison,  Italian investigators revealed they were looking for a fourth suspect in the stabbing.

They had found traces of DNA from a man who had left a bloody left-hand print on a pillowcase found at the scene.

The print was a match to Rudy Hermann Guede, a 20-year-old Ivorian native who has lived in Italy since the age of five.

Guede admitted that he was in the flat with Meredith when she died. He said they’d made a date the night before and had consensual sex.

Not only was Guede’s DNA found on the victim, but it was also on her bra and in the house.

Guede was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2008, but that verdict included a ruling that he did not commit the crime alone.

His sentence was later reduced on appeal before he was released early for good behaviour in 2021.

What happened to Amanda Knox?

After she was convicted of murdering Kercher in 2009, Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison.

In 2011, Knox and Sollecito were both found innocent by an eight-member jury, after inaccuracies were found in the process used to collect DNA evidence.

In March 2013, a retrial was ordered after prosecutors appealed that crucial DNA evidence had been left out, and in 2015, the convictions of Knox and Sollecito were definitively overturned by Italy’s highest court.

However, while she was exonerated for murder, in 2023, an appeals court in Florence gave Knox a three-year sentence for slander after wrongfully accusing Lumumba of killing Kercher.

As she had already served four years in prison, she is not at risk of further jail time, according to VOA News.

The show takes viewers through Knox’s arrest, the controversial interrogation and the trial.

The inspiration for the show, as described by the show-runner K.J. Steinberg, was to focus on Knox the person rather than the figure created by Italian authorities and the media.
