Shocking footage filmed after the stabbing spree shows the perpetrator facing off with armed police who were in civilian clothing.

At least four French officers surround the man as they shout instructions at him.

The knifeman, who still appears to have a weapon in his hand, erratically moves around shouting back as the cops close in.

He then makes a lunge forwards towards the advancing officers as multiple gunshots ring out.

The attacker was then seen on the ground as cops attended to the victims of his assault.

They were all given urgent attention at the scene with no major injuries reported, French police confirmed.

Emergency crews attending to the downed attacker said he was fighting for his life but is said to have now died, according to police sources.

Cops believe he was a Tunisian national born in 1990 who had been living in the hotel block above the restaurant, reports Le Parisien.

He is alleged to have carried out the twisted attack after being evicted from the apartment for not paying rent.

Armed with what eyewitness described as “two large butcher knives”, he went to his old room and stabbed the person who had moved in, Marseille public prosecutor Nicolas Bessone said.

The knifeman then made his way downstairs just after 2:45pm and stabbed the hotel manager “one or more times”, Bessone explained at a press briefing.

He fled the hotel and went out into the street before stabbing the manager’s son in the back.

Bessone added: “He continued his journey by going to a nearby snack bar, and there he tried to stab the manager.”

Brave customers are said to have pushed the attacker back as he ran away to the corner of Cours Belsunce where he was met by police before 3:30pm.

After he was shot, police cordoned off the street and put up a forensic tent outside of the restaurant.

French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau is due to visit the crime scene later today.

It comes just days after a crazed driver “deliberately reversed at high speed” into a crowd in Normandy.

One person was killed and five others injured the driver slammed into a group of pedestrians outside of a wine bar.

Three people were arrested – two who were inside the car and one who was outside, according to a judge.
