A brief tsunami threat alert was issued following the quake, but was subsequently dropped.

The US Geological Survey reported the earthquake early on Saturday morning.

Its epicentre was 69.3 miles east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, according to the agency.

No injuries or deaths have been reported in the immediate aftermath of the tremor.

Videos shared across social media have captured the moment the quake hit.

Objects and landscapes can be seen visibly trembling during the seismic activity.

It comes just weeks after a mammoth 8.8 magnitude earthquake battered the same part of Russia in late July.

This major quake – one of the largest ever recorded – saw tsunami warnings put in place across the Pacific Rim.
