In the Barcelona province, biblical flash floods tore through the streets causing widespread disruption.

Shocking footage showed pavements submerged beneath muddy torrents as the popular holiday destination was pummelled by rain.

Car alarms were heard blaring as locals and tourists alike were left trapped inside.

Work, classes and flights were disrupted because of the astonishing amount of rainfall, local media reported.

To make matters worse, many properties were left without power as a result of the gruelling rain.

Throughout the regions of Baix Llobregat and Vallès Occidental, a precipitation of about 100 liters per square meter was recorded.

Emergency services confirmed there have been no injuries so far.

Elsewhere in Catalonia, heavy rain continued to blitz Spanish cities.

Girona was soaked by the extreme weather, with flooding reported in Pals, Begur and Palafrugell.

In Pal and Begur between 60 and 70 liters per square meter of rain fell in less than half an hour.

Beaches were shut down and swimming was banned.

The Civil Protection issued a warning to locals reminding them to take caution amid the floods.

Catalonia was also given a yellow warning for storms during the intense weather.

The La Quar weather station in Barcelona said the Berguedà region recorded a historic 8 liters of water in one minute due to the biblical floods.

This new record exceeds the 7.6 millimeters per square meter in one minute, reported in September 2014 in Montserrat.

The rain left a total of 26.1 millimetres of water in five minutes – another unprecedented record for Catalan meteorological stations.

Meteocat issued warnings for violent weather in the regions of La Noguera, Pallars Jussà, Pallars Sobirà, Alt Urgell, Solsonès, Ripollés, Garrotxa, la Selva, Pla de l’Estany, Gironès, Osona, Lluçanès and Berguedà.

Intense storms also caused rivers to overflow, and emergency services reported receiving hundreds of calls in the ensuing panic.

Campers also told local media of waking up to knee-deep water.

The President of the Generalitat, the Catalan government, Salvador Illa, urged citizens to “exercise maximum caution, avoid flood-prone areas, and follow the recommendations of emergency services”.

Terrifying storms have also been raging elsewhere across Europe.

Last month, an unbelievable “supercell” storm left behind a trail of destruction in Italy.

Violent weather ripped through several tourist regions and left hundreds of trees uprooted from the ground before smashing up parked cars.

Intense rain, hail and winds reaching 60mph caused carnage with local media describing it as a “true maritime supercell”.

The phenomenon comes when a storm core that self-regenerates and brings in moisture from the warm sea.
